Headnote
A short, practical note to a friend in need of a small loan. Chekhov promises to send the money that same evening, once he has it in hand, and waves off any awkwardness about the favor. The letter closes with a domestic aside – rearranging plans for a dance at the home of his sister Marya Pavlovna, and inviting Savelyev and a mutual friend, Makar, round for tea – before Chekhov signs off with a single line noting he is at work on a story, a small glimpse of the medical student already writing fiction on the side.

I got your letter only late in the evening and hasten to answer it now. Thank you, in the first place, for not standing on ceremony and turning to me, and in the second, forgive me that this envelope is empty. The money you asked for (15 roubles, or 10 at the very least) I will send you by five or six o’clock this evening. I cannot send it any sooner, since I have only 3 roubles and some kopecks in my pocket. Try somehow to manage until evening.
Получил твое письмо только поздно вечером и на оное спешу ответить. Спасибо, во-первых, что не поцеремонился и обратился ко мне, а во-вторых, извини, что сей конверт пуст. Просимые тобою деньги (15 руб., в крайнем случае 10) пришлю тебе к 5–6 часам вечера. Ранее прислать не могу, ибо в кармане только 3 руб. с копейками. Как-нибудь постарайся обойтись до вечера.
Don’t think that you’re putting me out or anything of that kind... That would not be a comradely thought. Besides which I am literally sacrificing nothing by lending you the money. Please don’t stand on ceremony, and above all don’t feel awkward about it.
Не думай, что ты меня стесняешь и проч.... Это не товарищеская дума. Да к тому же я буквально ничем не жертвую, давая тебе взаймы. Пожалуйста, не церемонься и, главное, не стесняйся.
By the way: the ball (with the girl students) will be at Marya Pavlovna’s not on Monday but on Tuesday, which you should let Makar know. But do drop by on Monday all the same for a cup of tea. Bring Makar along too. That won’t count against the subscription.
Кстати: бал (с курсистками) будет у Марьи Павловны не в понедельник, а во вторник, о чем сообщи Макару. Ты же забеги и в понедельник чайку попить. Притащи и Макара. Это не в счет абонемента.
