Headnote

Written on 14 July 1884 from Zvenigorod, where Chekhov – freshly graduated and standing in for a district doctor on leave – describes a fortnight of rural medical practice: a heavy patient load by day, rain-soaked boredom by day’s end, and a wry inventory of the view from his window. The letter to his editor Nikolai Leikin at "Splinters" ("Oskolki") closes with a bit of literary gossip about the poet Liodor Palmin’s marriage, passed on with Chekhov’s characteristic mock discretion.

Dear
At present I find myself in the town of Zvenigorod, where by the whim of fate I am carrying out the duties of a district doctor, who begged me to stand in for him for a couple of weeks. Half the day is taken up with receiving patients (thirty to forty people a day), and the rest of the time I rest, or else grow terribly bored, sitting by the window and watching the dark sky, which for the third day running has been pouring down an unrelenting, disagreeable rain... In front of my window a hill with pines, further to the right the police captain’s house, further still a wretched little town that was once a capital of some kind... To the left an abandoned earthen rampart, further left a little wood, and from behind the latter peeps out Savva the Sanctified. The back porch, or rather the back door, near which it reeks of the privy and a piglet grunts, looks out on the river. Today is Saturday. So as not to miss the post, I hasten to send off my urgent work. I’ll scratch out the story tonight and send it tomorrow. Send letters to Voskresensk. From there everything reaches me without fail. I was in Moscow and heard that L. I. Palmin had gotten married to his old woman. I saw him, but he said nothing to me about it. Don’t tell him I told you this prosaic piece of news about so poetic a man... Perhaps for you it’s no longer news! Farewell.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
