Headnote

1 Written from Moscow on 27 December 1887, this New Year’s letter to Nikolai Leikin – editor of the humor magazine "Oskolki" ("Fragments"), Chekhov’s longtime patron in comic journalism, and by this date also his publisher – is an apology dressed up as a holiday greeting. Chekhov had promised Leikin some Yuletide sketches, missed the deadline, and here confesses the delay at length: he had assumed his stories weren’t much wanted, tried to write over the holidays anyway, produced something he judged too poor to send, and now asks Leikin’s forbearance while insisting that the leniency granted to established writers like Liodor Palmin cannot be extended to a "beginning scribbler" like himself.

2 Beyond the apology, the letter is full of practical shop talk: prodding Leikin to advertise his forthcoming book in "Novoye Vremya" and to see personally to its paper and binding rather than trust the printers; gossip about fellow contributors Ivan Shcheglov (praised as a genuine humorist) and Kazimir Barantsevich; a cryptic aside about the writer Alexander Gruzinsky and some salmon; and closing regards to Leikin’s wife Praskovya Nikiforovna and son Fedya. The Latin tag "Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi" and the closing image of "Oskolki" as his "baptismal font" and Leikin as his "godfather" both capture, half-jokingly, how much Chekhov felt he owed his start in print to this editor.

Dearest
If a holiday greeting can be accepted from a guilty man, then I congratulate you and wish you every earthly, heavenly, and literary blessing. I am guilty before you up to my very throat, and I sincerely admit it. I gave you my word, I have subjects, but I could not write. Before Christmas I did not sit down to write, for I thought my stories were not especially needed by you: I remembered that in the little editorial room, in Bilibin’s presence, when I promised to send you some Yuletide stories you answered me rather evasively and vaguely. But having received your letter over the holidays, I sat down to write and wrote such nonsense that I was ashamed to send it. You write that it makes no difference to you what the story is like, but I do not share that view. Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi \What is permitted to Jupiter is not permitted to the ox (Lat.).\. What will be forgiven to you and to Palmin, men who have already done their work and therefore have the right now and then to be a little careless, will not be forgiven to a beginning scribbler. In any case, do not be angry with me this time, and put yourself in my position.
Why don’t you give an announcement in the "Novoye Vremya" about your book? Send word that they should make the announcement on Mondays. It’s high time, even if the book hasn’t yet begun printing. I repeat once more: keep an eye on the printing yourself, for Suvorin, for all his wish to please his authors, cannot be forever at the printing house. Please, let the paper and the cover be a bit more elegant. You don’t hold with this, but just once in your life try it... Don’t be stubborn. Werner’s edition of "Innocent Speeches" is doing well only because it wasn’t printed in the ordinary style.
Have you and Shcheglov hit it off? He’s a great humorist. Read his story in the Christmas number of "Novoye Vremya" and you’ll be convinced of it. Invite Barantsevich too. Once every two months he can be given space, even though he isn’t a humorist.
In the sluggishness with which I work for you, for the Creator’s sake don’t suspect any evil intent, don’t think that I’m shirking "Oskolki." Not at all! "Oskolki" is my baptismal font, and you are my godfather.
My regards to Praskovya Nikiforovna and to Fedya, along with my congratulations. Farewell, don’t be angry, and keep well.
