Letter · 1890

To F. A. Kumanin, 10 December 1890. Moscow.

Ф. А. КУМАНИНУ, Около 10 декабря 1890 г. Москва.

Headnote

it opens with a warm salutation ("Hello, dear Fyodor Alexandrovich"), runs in ordinary connected prose, and closes with a brief epistolary sign-off ("Yours,") above the signed name. a dateline, one short paragraph of news and a practical question, a one-line remark about a future trip, a signature, and the envelope’s back-address block ("На обороте:" / "Здесь," / street and house / journal office / addressee name) – the ordinary shape of a short personal note preserved together with its envelope routing, not several documents spliced together.

Dating and context: the source edition dates the letter only approximately, "Around 10 December 1890," written from Moscow. This falls immediately after Chekhov’s return home from his journey to Sakhalin Island and back – the return route took him by sea through the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean (hence "the Archipelago," i.e. the Greek islands, where he says he caught cold) before the final overland leg to Moscow. He reports being confined indoors with a cold picked up en route.

Chekhov announces his arrival in Moscow and his cold; asks Kumanin a practical question about mounting some 50 photographs he brought back from the trip – what glue and what type of board to use – evidently seeking Kumanin’s expertise as a magazine editor handling illustrations; and adds a one-line aside that he plans to travel to the Arctic Ocean in the spring. The letter closes with a brief sign-off and is followed by the envelope’s back-address block, addressed for local Moscow delivery ("Здесь," i.e. "Here," meaning within the city) to Kumanin at the offices of the journal Artist.

Addressed to Fyodor Alexandrovich Kumanin (1855-1896), editor of the Moscow literary-artistic journal Artist, founded in 1889 – already established in this corpus as. Reuse that entity.

Hello, dear Fyodor Alexandrovich! I’ve arrived. I don’t go out of the house at all, since I’m coughing and blowing my nose every minute – I caught cold in the Archipelago. I’ve brought back with me about 50 photographs. Tell me, what glue do they use to stick them onto board: gum arabic or some other rubbish? What sort of board is best suited for it?
In the spring I’m going to the Arctic Ocean.
Весною еду в Ледовитый океан.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
