Letter · 1891

To Ye. M. Shavrova, 18 January 1891. Petersburg.

Е. М. ШАВРОВОЙ, 18 января 1891 г. Петербург.

Headnote

A brief follow-up to Chekhov’s letter of a week earlier (11 January 1891), written from Petersburg to the young writer Yelena Mikhailovna Shavrova, whom he had been mentoring since 1889. Here he simply reports that her story has appeared in the supplement to Suvorin’s Novoye Vremya – the same story he had read and praised in proof in the previous letter – and passes along Suvorin’s own warm approval of it. The note is little more than a courtesy: publication confirmed, good wishes sent, nothing more said.
