To I. P. Chekhov, 1891. Venice.
Headnote
An ecstatic travel letter of 24 March (5 April) 1891, from Venice, to Chekhov’s brother Ivan Pavlovich ("Ivan," a schoolteacher), part of the famous 1891 European travel series and the letter promised at the close of ("I’ll write to you from Venice"). Chekhov, two days into Venice after the journey from Vienna, gives an unrestrained description of the city – the canals and gondolas in place of streets and cabs, the Piazza San Marco, the cathedral and the doges’ palace, the nighttime gondola concerts, and the tombs of Canova and Titian – before closing with an aside about the local glasswork and a promise to write again.
24 March. Venice.
I am now in Venice, where I arrived the day before yesterday from Vienna. One thing I can say: I have never in my life seen a city more remarkable than Venice. It is sheer enchantment, brilliance, the joy of life. In place of streets and lanes, canals; in place of cabmen, gondolas; the architecture is astonishing, and there is not a corner that does not stir some historical or artistic interest. You float along in a gondola and see the palace of the doges, the house where Desdemona lived, the houses of famous painters, temples... And in the temples such sculpture and painting as we never dreamed of. In a word, enchantment.
The whole day, from morning to evening, I sit in a gondola and glide along the streets, or else wander about the famous Piazza San Marco. The piazza is smooth and clean as a parquet floor. Here is the cathedral of San Marco – something that cannot be described – the palace of the doges and buildings of such a kind that I feel toward them as one feels when notes are sung: I feel an astonishing beauty and I delight in it.
And the evening! Good Lord above! In the evening, unused as one is to it, one could die. You ride along in a gondola... Warm, still, the stars... There are no horses in Venice, and so the silence here is like that of open country. Gondolas dart about on every side... Here comes one hung with little lanterns. In it sit a double bass, violins, a guitar, a mandolin and a cornet, two or three ladies, several men – and you hear singing and music. They sing arias from the operas. What voices! You go a little further, and there is another boat with singers, and then another, and clear up to midnight the air is filled with a mingling of tenors, violins, and every kind of sound that takes hold of the soul.
Merezhkovsky, whom I met here, has gone out of his mind with delight. For a Russian, poor and downtrodden, it is not hard to lose one’s mind here, in a world of beauty, wealth, and freedom. One wants to stay here forever, and when one stands in a church and listens to the organ, one wants to become a Catholic.
In the palace of the doges there is a painting on which about ten thousand human figures are depicted.
Today is Sunday. There will be music playing on the Piazza San Marco.
Well, keep well, then. I wish you all good things. If you should ever happen to visit Venice, it will be the best thing in your life. If only you could see the glassworks here! Your bottles, next to these, are such an eyesore that it turns the stomach even to think of it.
I shall write again; till then, goodbye.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
