character

Ladzievsky

also: Ладзиевский, Ладзиевского, Лагиевский, Lagievsky

A character in Chekhov's novella "The Duel", still being revised as the novella ran serially in 1891. Chekhov offers to rename him "Lagievsky" if the surname "Ladzievsky" has struck Suvorin (or another reader) as unfortunate-sounding, while deciding to keep Von Koren's name as is; \S18 of this same letter asks what Ladzievsky is "copying out," suggesting a clerical role for the character within the story. A fictional character, not a real acquaintance -- flagged as an authorial work-in-progress reference.
