Contemptuous epithet, popularized by Saltykov-Shchedrin, for the upwardly mobile commoner or newly moneyed bourgeois/kulak type pressing into gentry privilege; used obsessively by Pavel Rashevich in 'At the Manor' as his catch-all term for the class he claims is degenerating civilization.
