Dukhovny Stikh (Spiritual Verse)

dukhovny stikh

also: духовный стих, spiritual verse, spiritual song

A genre of orally transmitted Russian religious folk laments, sung by wandering pilgrims and blind singers outside the official Church liturgy; the story's epigraph, "To whom shall I tell my grief?..", is drawn from this tradition and frames the whole narrative as an answer to an unanswerable liturgical question.
