A stock caricature in 1880s Russian popular satire: the shaggy-haired young man suspected of radical (nihilist) opinions, identifiable to the barber Mikhailo by hairstyle alone -- the joke of the story's first scene is his mistaking a deacon's long hair for the mark of a freethinker.
