At the Baths

В бане

Headnote

1 At the Baths (В бане) appeared in 1884, one of the rapid-fire comic sketches Chekhov turned out in his early twenties under the pseudonym “Antosha Chekhonte.” Its setting is a Russian public bathhouse – the steam room and its shelves, the anteroom, the attendants and their customers – a democratic, half-undressed space where rank still insists on being observed even though everyone present is, as the story dryly notes, “as bare as any bare man is.”

The story falls into two loosely joined scenes. In the first, a talkative barber named Mikhailo airs his opinions on marriageable young women and “education” to a fat client taking cupping-glasses, only to pick a fight with a gaunt, long-haired stranger on the upper shelf – whom he denounces as a dangerous man “with ideas” and tries to have reported to the authorities, before discovering, to his mounting horror, that the man he has insulted is in fact a deacon. In the second, two bathers, Nikodim Yegorych and Makar Tarasych, steam themselves while Makar Tarasych delivers a long, self-pitying monologue on his daughter Dasha’s string of failed engagements – a schoolmaster who backs out days before the wedding, a merchant who marries at gunpoint, a Ukrainian clerk undone by the size of the guest list, a forester lost over three hundred roubles of haggling.

Both scenes turn on the same comic engine: a speaker convinced of his own shrewdness and rectitude, talking past everyone around him, undone by his own words. Mikhailo’s paranoia about “long-haired” radicals collapses the moment the suspect turns out to be a clergyman; Makar Tarasych’s tirade against “spoiled,” mercenary suitors keeps circling back, without his noticing, to his own stinginess and misjudgment as the real cause of his daughter’s unmarried state. Chekhov reports both monologues at full tilt and lets the reader supply the diagnosis the narrator never states.
