Parish Priest (Iyerey)
priest
also: иерей, отец иерей
The ordained parish priest, ranking above deacon and sexton in the Russian Orthodox clergy, responsible for the liturgy and the moral oversight of his lower clergy.
Reading notes
- Surgery §22 Father the priest
The parish priest (иерей), Vonmiglasov's superior in the church hierarchy, who scolds him for slurring the liturgy -- unaware it is his toothache, not negligence, at fault.
- During Holy Week §14 And I, an unworthy priest... by the power given unto me, forgive and absolve you of all your sins
A close rendering of the standard Slavonic absolution formula ("И аз, недостойный иерей, властию Его мне данною, прощаю и разрешаю тя от всех грехов твоих"), spoken by the priest over each penitent in turn; its repetition, word for word, at section 19 for Mitka and implicitly for Fedya underscores that the same sacramental words are pronounced over every penitent regardless of Fedya's private judgments about who deserves them.
