A Happy Ending

Headnote

1 A Happy Ending (“Khoroshy konets”) dates from 1887, the year Chekhov – by now writing under his own name rather than as “Antosha Chekhonte” – was moving from the disposable comic sketch toward longer, more fully staged work while still turning out short pieces for the humor weeklies. This one is built almost entirely as a single scene of dialogue: a head railway conductor named Stychkin, a solid, self-satisfied bachelor of fifty-two, receives a professional matchmaker in his rooms and, over repeated glasses of refreshment, negotiates the terms of a wife – her looks, her temperament, her dowry, the matchmaker’s fee – exactly as he might negotiate a purchase.

2 The comedy turns on Stychkin’s total unselfconsciousness: he treats marriage as a transaction to be itemized (character before beauty, modest means before poverty, deference above all), states his commercial calculations about the matchmaker’s own income within her hearing, and does the tidy arithmetic of it – praising her figure, her fair complexion, and finally her yearly “dividends” – before proposing to her instead, entirely swept along by his own logic. Chekhov reports Stychkin’s inflated, malapropism- laced officialese (his half-remembered scraps of French and elevated diction) without editorial comment, letting the self-interest embedded in the courtship convention speak for itself; the title’s “happy ending” is the joke, since the happiness on display is bookkeeping dressed as sentiment.

At the head conductor Stychkin’s place, on one of his days off, sat Lyubov Grigoryevna, a substantial, floury-faced lady of about forty, who occupied herself with matchmaking and many other affairs of the kind one is expected to mention only in a whisper. Stychkin, somewhat abashed but, as always, grave, solid, and severe, was pacing about the room, smoking a cigar, and saying:
“Most pleased to make your acquaintance. Semyon Ivanovich recommended you to me on the grounds that you might assist me in a certain delicate and highly important matter concerning the happiness of my life. I, Lyubov Grigoryevna, am already fifty-two years old – that is, at an age when a great many men already have grown children. My position is a solid one. Though I have no great fortune, I am able to support a beloved being and children in decent style. I will tell you, between ourselves, that besides my salary I also have money in the bank, which I have saved through my mode of life. I am a solid and sober man, I lead a well-founded and orderly life, so that I might serve as an example to many. But one thing only I lack – a hearth of my own and a companion in life, and I lead my life like some wandering Hungarian, from place to place, without any pleasure, with no one to take counsel with, and, should I fall ill, no one even to bring me water and so forth. Besides which, Lyubov Grigoryevna, a married man always carries more weight in society than a bachelor... I am a man of the educated class, with means, but if one looks at me from a certain point of view, what am I? A single man, no different from some Catholic priest. And so I very much wish to bind myself in the bonds of matrimony – that is, to enter into lawful wedlock with some worthy person.”
“A fine thing!” sighed the matchmaker.
“I am a solitary man and know no one in this town. Where am I to go, to whom am I to turn, when for me all people are unknown quantities? That is why Semyon Ivanovich advised me to apply to a person who is a specialist in this line and who, with regard to people’s happiness, has it as her profession. And so I most earnestly beg you, Lyubov Grigoryevna, to arrange my fate with your assistance. You know all the marriageable girls in town, and it will be easy for you to fit me out.”
“That can be done...”
“Do have some refreshment, I humbly beg you...”
With a practiced gesture the matchmaker raised the glass to her lips, drank it off, and did not wince.
“That can be done,” she repeated. “And what sort of bride would you like, Nikolai Nikolaich?”
“Me, sir? Whatever fate sends.”
“Well, of course, that is a matter for fate, but still, every man has his own taste. One likes brunettes, another blondes.”
“You see, Lyubov Grigoryevna...” said Stychkin, sighing gravely. “I am a solid man and a man of character. For me, beauty and outward appearance in general play a secondary role, because, as you yourself know, one cannot drink water off a pretty face, and with a pretty wife there is a great deal of bother. I hold that in a woman the main thing is not what is on the outside, but what is within – that is, that she should have a soul and all the proper qualities. Do have some refreshment, I humbly beg you... It is, of course, very pleasant if a wife happens to be plump, but that is not of essential importance to the mutual fortune; the main thing is intelligence. Properly speaking, a woman doesn’t even need intelligence, because from intelligence she will get a high opinion of herself and start thinking up all sorts of notions. Nowadays one cannot do without education, that is certain, but education comes in different kinds. It is pleasant if a wife speaks French and German, in various voices as it were, very pleasant; but what use is that if she cannot, say, sew on a button for you? I am of the educated class, I may say, on a footing with Prince Kantelin himself, quite the same as I am sitting with you now, but I have a simple character. I need a plainer sort of girl. The main thing above all is that she should respect me and feel that I have made her happy.”
“A well-known matter.”
“Well, sir, now as to the substance of the thing... I have no need of a rich one. I will not permit myself such baseness as to marry for money. I wish it to be not I who eats the wife’s bread, but she who eats mine, so that she may feel it. But neither do I need a poor one. Though I am a man of means, and though I am marrying not out of self-interest but for love, still I cannot take a poor one, because, as you know yourself, everything has grown dearer nowadays, and there will be children.”
“One can find a match with a dowry too,” said the matchmaker.
“Do have some refreshment, I humbly beg you...”
They were silent for about five minutes. The matchmaker sighed, glanced sidelong at the conductor, and asked:
“Well, and as for that other business, my dear man... you wouldn’t have need of the unmarried sort of goods, would you? There’s good merchandise to be had. One’s a little Frenchwoman, and the other will be from among the Greek girls. Very worthwhile articles.”
The conductor thought it over and said:
“No, thank you. Seeing such goodwill on your part, allow me now to ask: how much will you take for your trouble over the bride?”
“I don’t need much. You’ll give me twenty-five roubles and material for a dress, as is customary, and my thanks... And for the dowry, that’s separate, that’s another reckoning.”
Stychkin folded his arms across his chest and fell to thinking in silence. Having thought it over, he sighed and said:
“That is dear...”
“And not in the least dear, Nikolai Nikolaich! Time was, when there were many weddings, we took less, but by present times – what are our earnings? If in a good month you earn two twenty-five-rouble notes, thank God for it. And even then, my dear man, it isn’t from weddings alone that we make our living.”
Stychkin looked at the matchmaker in perplexity and shrugged his shoulders.
“Hm!... Do you mean to say two twenty-five-rouble notes is little?” he asked.
“Little indeed! In former times we used to make more than a hundred, and it happened often enough.”
“Hm!... I never expected that such matters could earn one such a sum. Fifty roubles! Not every man earns as much! Do have some refreshment, I humbly beg you...”
The matchmaker drank and did not wince. Stychkin looked her over from head to foot in silence and said:
“Fifty roubles... That means, six hundred roubles a year... Do have some refreshment, I humbly beg you... With such dividends, you know, Lyubov Grigoryevna, it would not be difficult for you to make a match for yourself...”
“For me?” laughed the matchmaker. “I’m an old woman...”
“Not in the least, madam... And you have such a figure, and such a full, fair face, and all the rest of it.”
The matchmaker grew flustered. Stychkin grew flustered too, and sat down beside her.
“You could still please a man very well,” he said. “If a husband should come your way who is solid, steady, and thrifty, then, with his salary and your earnings besides, you might please him very well indeed, and live soul to soul...”
“God knows what you are saying, Nikolai Nikolaich...”
“What of it? I mean nothing by it...”
A silence fell. Stychkin began blowing his nose loudly, and the matchmaker flushed and, looking at him with a bashful air, asked:
“And how much do you earn, Nikolai Nikolaich?”
“Me, madam? Seventy-five roubles, besides bonuses... Besides that, we have an income from stearin candles and hares.”
“Do you go hunting, then?”
“No, madam, ‘hares’ is what we call the passengers who travel without a ticket.”
Another minute passed in silence. Stychkin rose and, in agitation, began pacing about the room.
“I have no need of a young wife,” he said. “I am a man getting on in years, and I need one who is... something like yourself... steady and substantial... and of a figure something like yours...”
“And God knows what you are saying...” the matchmaker tittered, covering her crimson face with her handkerchief.
“What is there to think long about? You are after my own heart, and to my mind you suit me in your qualities. I am a solid, sober man, and if I please you, then... what could be better? Allow me to make you an offer!”
The matchmaker burst into tears, laughed, and, in token of her consent, clinked glasses with Stychkin.
“Well, then,” said the happy head conductor, “now allow me to explain to you what manner of conduct and mode of life I require of you... I am a strict, solid, and sober man, I understand everything in a noble spirit, and I wish my wife to be strict as well, and to understand that I am her benefactor and the foremost man in her life.”
He sat down and, sighing deeply, began to expound to his betrothed his views on family life and the duties of a wife.
