A head conductor (ober-konduktor) on a night train who, freshly resolved to be diligent, wakes a sick second-class passenger to check his ticket and is dragged through an escalating farce of public outrage, a stationmaster's mediation, and a forced apology -- ending the night resolving never to bother with duty again.

"Ober-konduktor" (head conductor) was the senior conductor on an Imperial Russian train, responsible for the whole train's operation and its junior conductors; he ranked above the ordinary "konduktor" who worked a single car, and answered in turn to the stationmaster and, ultimately, the superintendent of traffic (nachal'nik dvizheniya).
