Headnote
Chekhov wrote “The Alarm Clock’s Calendar” (Kalendar’ “Budil’nika”) in 1880 for the Moscow humor weekly Budilnik (“The Alarm Clock”), one of the several comic papers that carried the teenage medical student’s earliest work under the pen name Antosha Chekhonte. He was twenty. The piece parodies the popular almanac genre – the cheap wall calendars sold across Russia that combined a day-by-day grid with folk astrology, saints’ name-days, weather forecasts, and household advice – by filling every entry with escalating nonsense: an eclipse visible in exactly one obscure provincial town, dinners of fried newspaper and cuttlefish with stuffing, and a chronicle of world history in which Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Archimedes, and the day’s minor journalistic rivals share equal billing with invented figures.
The target is double. On one level the calendar form itself is an easy mark – pseudo-scientific certainty about the unknowable, dispensed by the sheet for a kopeck a copy. On the other, Chekhov aims the joke at Moscow’s own newspaper world: real editors, actors, and public men of 1880-1882 (Suvorin, Boborykin, the critic and publisher Prince Meshchersky, the actor-managers of the Maly and Bolshoi theaters) are dropped into absurd non-events alongside Homer’s suitors and Sarah Bernhardt’s serial engagements. A reader of Budilnik would have caught most of these as topical digs that have since gone opaque; a modern reader can still feel the machine-gun rhythm of the gag even where the referent is lost.
The piece belongs to Chekhov’s earliest, fastest manner – comedy built from pure enumeration and non-sequitur, with none of the psychological interiority of the mature stories. It runs across several consecutive issues of the magazine (hence the recurring “Notes to the calendar” sections addressed to real or invented correspondents, and the final entries signed off by a different editor, G. Baldastov, a fellow Budilnik contributor). Watch for the running bits that carry the piece: the doomed train buried in snow at the station “Break-Your-Neck,” the secretary who loses and later finds his hat, and the suckling pig served with horseradish, then without, then horseradish alone – a joke about menu padding that any reader of a magazine calendar’s filler copy would recognize instantly.

We began it on March 8th because we foresaw that in January, February, and the early part of March absolutely nothing would happen, apart from the usual tiresome Tuesdays, Thursdays, and so on. For reasons unknown to the calendar’s editor, this past February did not even have a 29th or 30th.
