Live oysters, eaten raw in their shells -- an exotic, expensive delicacy wholly unknown to the story's starving eight-year-old narrator, whose fevered mind reimagines the unfamiliar word first as a warm fish stew, then as a repulsive frog-like creature, before hunger overpowers his disgust entirely.
