Bishop Pyotr
Pyotr
also: His Eminence Pyotr, Преосвященный Петр, Pavlusha, Павлуша
A vicar (suffragan) bishop, the story's central figure, who falls ill with typhoid fever during Holy Week and dies the Saturday before Easter, already half-forgotten by the world within a month. Once a poor deacon's son named Pavlusha, he rises through the seminary and academy to the episcopate, but finds his rank has made him a stranger even to his own mother.
Reading notes
- The Bishop §5 the bishop
Bishop Pyotr, the story's central figure: a vicar (suffragan) bishop, unwell with what proves to be typhoid fever, who dies over the course of Holy Week. Chekhov calls him "the bishop" in plain narration but has everyone address him as "His Eminence" or "Vladyka."
- The Bishop §19 Pavlusha
Bishop Pyotr's own childhood name, used by his mother and in his memories of Lesopolye and Obnino -- the private self buried under the offices of archimandrite, then bishop.
- The Bishop §114 bishop
"What sort of bishop am I?" -- Pyotr's own moment of plain self-doubt, dropping the honorific "His Eminence" for the bare office, and wishing himself instead a village priest or a simple monk.
