1 My uncle Pyotr Demyanych, a dry, bilious
collegiate councillor who bore a striking resemblance to a stale smoked whitefish impaled on a stick, was getting ready one day for the
gymnasium, where he taught Latin, when he noticed that the binding of his syntax textbook had been gnawed by mice.
2 "Listen here,
Praskovya," he said, going into the kitchen and addressing
the cook. "Where have these mice of ours come from? For pity’s sake, yesterday they chewed up my top hat, today they’ve mangled my syntax... At this rate they’ll start on the clothes next!"
3 "And what am I to do about it? I didn’t bring them here!" answered
Praskovya.
4 "Well, something has to be done! You might get a cat, mightn’t you..."
5 "There is a cat; but what use is she?"
6 And Praskovya pointed to the corner, where, curled up beside the broom,
a white kitten, thin as a splinter, lay dozing.
7 "Why is she no use?" asked Pyotr Demyanych.
8 "She’s still young and foolish. She’s not even two months old yet, if you please."
9 "Hm... Then she must be trained! Better she learn something than lie about like that."
10 Having said this, Pyotr Demyanych sighed anxiously and left the kitchen. The kitten raised her head, glanced lazily after him, and closed her eyes again.
11 The kitten was not asleep; she was thinking. About what? Unacquainted with real life, possessing no store of impressions, she could only think instinctively, picturing existence according to those notions which she had inherited, along with flesh and blood,
from her forebears the tigers (see Darwin). Her thoughts had the character of drowsy reveries. Her feline imagination conjured up something like an Arabian desert, across which drifted shadows very much resembling Praskovya, the stove, the broom. Among the shadows a saucer of milk would suddenly appear; little legs would sprout from the saucer, it would begin to move and show an inclination to flee; the kitten would make a leap and, swooning with bloodthirsty rapture, sink her claws into it... When the saucer vanished into the mist, a piece of meat dropped by Praskovya would appear; the meat, squeaking timorously, would run off to one side, but the kitten would leap and sink in her claws... Whatever the young dreamer imagined had for its starting point leaps, claws, and teeth... Another’s soul is darkness, and a cat’s soul darker still, but how close these just-described visions came to the truth may be judged from the following fact: in the midst of her drowsy reveries the kitten suddenly sprang up, looked at Praskovya with flashing eyes, bristled her fur, and, making a leap, sank her claws into the cook’s hem. Evidently she had been born a mouser, thoroughly worthy of her bloodthirsty ancestors. Fate had destined her to become the terror of cellars, pantries, and granaries – had it not been for her upbringing... But let us not run ahead of ourselves.
12 Returning from the gymnasium, Pyotr Demyanych stopped at the corner shop and bought a mousetrap for fifteen kopecks. At dinner he speared a bit of cutlet on the hook and set the trap under the sofa, where the boys’ exercise books that Praskovya used for household purposes tended to fall. At exactly six o’clock in the evening, as the venerable Latinist sat at his table correcting his pupils’ notebooks, there came from under the sofa a sudden "snap!" – so loud that
my uncle started and dropped his pen. Without delay he went to the sofa and drew out the mousetrap. A small, tidy mouse, no bigger than a thimble, was sniffing at the wire and trembling with fright.
13 "Aha-a!" muttered Pyotr Demyanych, gazing at the mouse with such malicious satisfaction as if he were about to give her a failing mark. "Ca-a-aught, you scoundrel! Just you wait, I’ll show you how to eat syntax!"
14 Having gazed his fill upon his victim, Pyotr Demyanych set the mousetrap on the floor and shouted:
15 "Praskovya, a mouse has been caught! Bring the kitten in here!"
16 "Comi-ing!" answered Praskovya, and a minute later came in, holding in her arms the descendant of tigers.
17 "Excellent!" muttered Pyotr Demyanych, rubbing his hands together. "We shall train her... Set her down facing the mousetrap... There, like that... Let her sniff and have a look... There, like that..."
18 The kitten looked at her uncle in astonishment, then at the armchairs, sniffed the mousetrap in bewilderment, then, frightened, no doubt, by the bright lamplight and the attention directed at her, tore free and dashed in terror toward the door.
19 "Stop!" cried the uncle, seizing her by the tail. "Stop, you little wretch! Frightened of a mouse, you fool! Look: this is a mouse! Look, I tell you! Well? Look, do you hear me!"
20 Pyotr Demyanych took the kitten by the scruff of the neck and poked her muzzle at the mousetrap.
21 "Look, you scamp! Take hold of her, Praskovya, and hold her fast... Hold her facing the little door... When I let the mouse out, you let her out at once too... Do you hear? The very instant! Well?"
22 The uncle assumed a mysterious expression and raised the little door... The mouse came out hesitantly, sniffed the air, and shot like an arrow under the sofa... The kitten, once released, shot her tail straight up and ran under the table.
23 "She’s gone! Gone!" cried Pyotr Demyanych, making a ferocious face. "Where is she, the scoundrel? Under the table? Just you wait..."
24 The uncle dragged the kitten out from under the table and shook her in the air...
25 "You wretch, you..." he muttered, cuffing her ear. "There, take that! Take that! Will you gape about next time? You wre-e-etch..."
26 The next day Praskovya again heard the familiar cry:
27 "Praskovya, a mouse has been caught! Bring the kitten in here!..."
28 The kitten, after yesterday’s humiliation, had hidden beneath the stove and had not come out all night. When Praskovya pulled her out and, carrying her by the scruff into the study, set her before the mousetrap, she trembled all over and mewed pitifully.
29 "Now then, let her get used to it first!" commanded Pyotr Demyanych. "Let her look and sniff. Look and learn! Stay still, blast you!" he cried, noticing the kitten shrinking back from the trap. "I’ll thrash you! Give her ear a tug! There, like that... Now set her facing the little door..."
30 The uncle slowly raised the little door... The mouse darted out right under the kitten’s nose, brushed against Praskovya’s hand, and ran off under the cupboard; the kitten, meanwhile, finding herself free, made a desperate leap and hid beneath the sofa.
31 "Let another mouse get away!" bellowed Pyotr Demyanych. "What sort of cat is this?! It’s a disgrace, worthless! Whip her! Whip her right by the mousetrap!"
32 By the time the third mouse was caught, the kitten, at the sight of the trap and its occupant, shook all over and scratched Praskovya’s hands... After the fourth mouse the uncle lost all patience, kicked the kitten aside, and said:
33 "Get this vermin out of here! I don’t want her in the house by tonight! Throw her out somewhere! She’s fit for nothing at all!"
34 A year passed. The thin, sickly kitten had turned into a stout, sober-minded tomcat. One day, making his way through the back lanes, he was on his way to a romantic rendezvous. Already close to his destination, he suddenly heard a rustling, and then saw a mouse running from the watering trough toward the stable... My hero bristled, arched his back, hissed, and, trembling all over, faint-heartedly took to flight.
35 Alas!
I too sometimes find myself in the ridiculous position of that fleeing tomcat. Like the kitten, I once had the honor of studying Latin under my uncle. Now, whenever I happen to see some work of classical antiquity, instead of eagerly delighting in it, I begin to recall
the ut consecutivum, the irregular verbs, my uncle’s sallow-gray face,
the ablativus absolutus... I turn pale, my hair stands on end, and, like the tomcat, I break into a shameful flight.
ablativus absolutus...
