Картинки из недавнего прошлого

Headnote

1 Pictures from the Recent Past (“Картинки из недавнего прошлого” in the original) was published in 1884, when Chekhov was twenty-four and still writing at the breakneck pace of his “Antosha Chekhonte” years – short, unsigned or lightly signed comic sketches turned out for the humor weeklies to pay his way through medical school and support his family. It belongs to a loose group of pieces from this period built not as stories with a plot but as sequences of scenes: dated, captioned tableaux that let a single social target be struck from several angles in quick succession.

The target here is unmistakable and topical for its moment: the collapse, in 1882-1883, of the Skopin Mutual Credit Society, whose director Ivan Rykov had for years run what amounted to a pyramid scheme, forging accounts, buying the silence of the town council and the press, and paying his creditors with new depositors’ money until the whole structure gave way. The Rykov affair was one of the great financial scandals of the era, tried in Moscow in 1884-1885 with wide newspaper coverage; Chekhov’s sketch trades on a reader’s fresh memory of the case rather than inventing its own. “Rykov,” “Skopin,” and the specific mechanics of endorsed notes, suppressed accounts, and a bought town council are all drawn directly from the scandal as it was reported.

The four scenes – the private office where a grateful client’s interest is quietly folded into principal and a bribe is procured by proxy; the council meeting where a compromising absence is explained away and the accounts wave through unread because every objector is himself in debt to the bank; the post office where a postmaster on the bank’s payroll stonewalls a citizen trying to trace letters to newspaper editors that never arrived – assemble, without a word of commentary, a portrait of a town’s institutions bought outright and running interference for a swindle in plain sight. Chekhov’s method is the one he was already practicing at speed in these years: report the gesture, the aside, the overheard phrase, and let the reader assemble the indictment. The comedy is broad and fast, built on repetition (“Heh-heh...”, “Blagodarim! Blagodarim!”) and on characters who condemn themselves in their own mouths, but the anger underneath the joke – at a press silenced, a council bought, a public defrauded and then made complicit – is close to the surface for so early a piece. The bare “Notes” heading that closes the text in the source is an editorial holdover from the printed edition and carries no further prose.
