Iona (Khlopov's story)

Iona

also: Иона

The village sexton (dyachok) hero of the short story Nikolai Khlopov submitted to Chekhov for critique; in the story he tends two desyatinas of land and is (implausibly, per Chekhov's critique) transferred between posts by a church warden. Distinct from Iona Potapov, the cabman of Chekhov's own story "Toska".
