5 I have read your story; it is good and will probably be accepted, and so I think it not out of place to tell you the following, in advance and as promptly as I can. If you are counting on it as a serious step and mean to make your debut with it, then in that sense, in my opinion, it will not succeed. The reason lies not in the subject, not in the execution, but in fixable trifles – in a purely Moscow carelessness of finish and in a few details, unimportant in themselves, but that catch the eye unpleasantly.
6 To begin with, phrases keep turning up that are heavy as cobblestones. For instance, on page 2 there is the phrase: "he called on me twice in the course of half an hour." Or: "upon Iona’s lips there appeared a long, somewhat embarrassed smile." One cannot say "a lengthy rain spattered down," and by the same token, you’ll agree, the phrase "a long smile appeared" will not do either. Still, that is a trifle... But here is something not quite so minor: where have you ever seen a church
warden named Sidorkin? True, there exist church elders, or churchwardens, but no elder or warden, however influential a merchant he may be, has the right or the power to transfer a
sexton from one post to another... That is a matter for
the bishop... It would ring truer if
your Iona had simply been transferred from the town to a village for drunkenness.
7 The passage where Iona fusses over his two
desyatinas of land, like a spider over a fly, is excellent, but why do you spoil its charm with a description of an impossible and improbable bit of business with the plow? Is that really necessary? You know that a man plowing for the first time in his life will not budge the plow an inch – that is one; it is more profitable for a sexton to give his land over to be worked on shares – that is two; you could not lure the sparrows out of the village into the field with any amount of bread – that is three...
8 "I sit astride the crossbeam, the one that joins the hut to the shed" (page 16). What crossbeam is this? The figure of
the clerk in his little jacket with wisps of hay in his hair is a stock type, and besides, it has already been invented by the humor magazines. Clerks are cleverer, and unhappier, than is generally supposed, and so on.
9 At the end of the story the sexton (this is very charming, and apt) sings: "
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and let it rejoice..." No such prayer exists. But there is this one: "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name..."
10 One last remark: the punctuation marks, which serve as the notes by which a piece is read, are scattered through your work like the buttons on the uniform of
Gogol’s
police chief. An abundance of ellipses and a want of full stops.
11 These trifles, in my opinion, will spoil the music for you. Were it not for them, the story would pass for a model piece of work. You will not, of course, be angry with me for this "sermon," and you will understand that I write it as your counsel, with this aim: might you not find it worthwhile, in view of everything said above, to make some corrections in the story? Polishing it and copying it out again will take another two hours, no more, but the story will only gain by it.
12 I repeat: even without the corrections, "Iona" is good and will be accepted, but if you mean to make it a serious debut, then, as far as I know the judges in
Petersburg, it will not succeed.
13 I await your answer, and beg your pardon for this unasked-for interference.
14 Keep well.
