To A. S. Kiselev, 15 February 1888. Moscow.
А. С. КИСЕЛЕВУ, 15 февраля 1888 г. Москва.
Headnote
1 Written from Moscow on February 15, 1888, to Aleksey Kiselev, the owner of the Babkino estate where the Chekhov family had spent previous summers. Addressed to Kiselev with the mock-formal "Squire!!", the letter is breezy and joking throughout, fielding a string of Kiselev’s practical questions with deliberately evasive banter.
2 Chekhov reports on the family’s uncertain summer plans – his parents and siblings are drawn to Babkino, but his mother and father also long to revisit their native Ukraine ("Khokhlandia"), and the family is scouting dachas in the south as well. He gives Kiselev pointed advice on placing a newspaper advertisement to rent out the Babkino house (price it high; run it only in the "Russkie Vedomosti"), passes on literary gossip – Korolenko’s visit, the touring success of "Ivanov," the warm reception of his own steppe novella, and terms the editor Berg is paying for short fiction – and jokes about his own empty pockets and a lottery ticket that might fix it.
