Headnote
1 Written from Moscow on February 15, 1888, to Chekhov’s older brother Aleksandr Pavlovich (addressed here by the nickname "Gusiadi"), this letter opens with an apology for his silence – pure laziness, he says – and news of his own work: he has just finished the novella "The Steppe" and expects it to appear in the March "Severny Vestnik."
2 Much of the letter concerns Aleksandr’s household. Chekhov, a physician, addresses the illness of Aleksandr’s wife, Anna Ivanovna, reassuring her about a "gumma" diagnosis and expressing satisfaction that the doctors Knokh and Slyunin – whose earlier diagnoses he had doubted – were proven wrong. He also touches on literary gossip (the playwright "Ivanov" touring the provinces, the critic Burenin’s treatment of the writer Yasinsky), asks after his brother’s children, and mentions that the Chekhov family will summer in the south.

I haven’t written to you in so long because laziness got in the way; I don’t feel like writing, only lying flat on my back and spitting at the ceiling.

I am resting. Not long ago I finished a long novella (five printer’s sheets), which, should you wish, you will see in the March issue of "Severny Vestnik." I received a 500-ruble advance. The novella is called "The Steppe."
Я отдыхаю. Недавно написал большую (5 печатных листов) повесть, которую, буде пожелаешь, узришь в мартовской книжке "Северного вестника". Получил задатку 500 р. Повесть называется так: "Степь".
On the whole I feel a dog’s old age coming on. I doubt I shall ever go back to the newspapers now! Farewell, past! I shall write the odd piece for Suvorin now and then, but the rest, I expect, I’ll cross off the list.
Вообще чувствую собачью старость. Едва ли уж я вернусь в газеты! Прощай, прошлое! Буду изредка пописывать Суворину, а остальных, вероятно, похерю.

I’m at fault before Anna Ivanovna for not answering her letter. I’ll answer once she’s recovered, since I consider it harmful to hold a long discussion of an illness with the person who is ill. Tell her not to worry about the "gumma." Potassium iodide helps with more than syphilis alone – a "gumma" can arise from various causes.
Я виноват перед Анной Ивановной, что не отвечаю на ее письмо. Отвечу по ее выздоровлении, ибо длинно толковать с больным о его болезни я считаю вредным. Пусть ее не волнует "гумма". Йодистый калий помогает не при одном только сифилисе, а "гумма" разная бывает.
In any case I’m glad she’s recovering, and that Knokh, Slyunin and Co. came off in disgrace. I’m glad you turned, as I advised you, to someone who actually knows the subject; I’m glad I didn’t believe in the talk of tubercles, a liver abscess, an operation, catarrh of the bile ducts, and so on. It seemed to me that I knew more than Knokh and his colleagues, and now I’m convinced of it. It’s very gratifying, though on the other hand also a pity, that I’ve turned out to be right.
Во всяком случае я рад, что она выздоравливает и что Кнох, Слюнин и Кo потерпели срам. Рад, что ты обратился, как я советовал тебе, к знающему человеку; рад я, что не верил бугорчатке, абсцессу печени, операции, катару желчных путей и проч. Мне казалось, что я знаю больше Кноха и Кo, и теперь я в этом убежден. Очень приятно, хотя с другой стороны и жаль, что я "фастаю".
On the 19th my new one-act trifle opens. "Ivanov" is making the rounds of Russia and has already been given more than once in Kharkov.
19-го идет моя новая пьеска в одном действии. "Иванов" ходит по Руси и не раз уж давался в Харькове.
M. Belinsky is a fitting contributor. But – you may pass this opinion of mine on to Burenin without hiding it – by turning up at "Novoye Vremya" he’s spat in his own face. No cat in the whole world ever tormented a mouse the way Burenin tormented Yasinsky, and... and what came of it? Every disgrace has its own decency, and so, in Yasinsky’s place, I wouldn’t show my nose not only at "Novoye Vremya" but even on Malaya Italyanskaya.
М. Белинский сотрудник подходящий. Но – можешь не скрыть это мое мнение от Буренина – своим появлением в "Новом времени" он плюнул себе в лицо. Ни одна кошка во всем мире не издевалась так над мышью, как Буренин издевался над Ясинским, и... и что же? Всякому безобразию есть свое приличие, а посему на месте Ясинского я не показывал бы носа не только в "Нов время", но даже на Малую Итальянскую.
I’ll write to Suvorin today. It’s a pity this serious, talented, and now-aging man wastes his time on such nonsense as actresses and bad plays...
