Alexander's young sons, greeted together as "future geniuses" in a stock closing endearment; this Nikolai ("Nikolka") is Alexander's son, previously attested in the corpus (first appearance) and part of the "pups" collective (family:alexander-chekhov-sons) alongside his brother Anton (Chekhov's own godson and namesake). Distinct from both other Nikolais in this letter's orbit: the newly dead Suvorin manservant Nikolai of section 7 and the late painter brother Nikolai Pavlovich Chekhov, who is not directly named in this letter but shares the name and is a recurring point of possible confusion across the corpus. Three distinct Nikolais therefore intersect this one short letter: do not conflate any of them.
