Letter · 1883

To Al. P. Chekhov, 20 October 1883. Moscow.

Ал. П. Чехову, Около 20 октября 1883 г. Москва.

Headnote

A short, practical note to his elder brother Alexander, written in Moscow in the autumn of 1883, when Chekhov was twenty-three and still several years from finishing his medical studies. The occasion is entirely domestic: their brother NikolaiNikolka, the talented and already unsteady painter of the family – needed his military-service registration sorted out back in Taganrog, the family’s home town on the Sea of Azov, which the Chekhovs had left under financial pressure a few years before. Anton, in Moscow, has no way to check the town council’s records himself and asks Alexander, then in the south, to make the inquiry and report back quickly.

The letter belongs to a cluster of notes exchanged with Alexander and their brother Ivan across these same October weeks, all turning on the same small family logistics – who is where, what needs registering, what needs to be sent. Nothing in it aspires to literature; it is Chekhov the eldest working brother, already the family’s de facto administrator, tending to the kind of bureaucratic detail – conscription rolls, town council paperwork – that could otherwise cost a young man dearly if left unattended. The mock-formal Latin "Tuus" in the sign-off is a small private joke of the kind Chekhov drops into letters to family throughout his twenties, letting a moment of real urgency close on a note of affection rather than anxiety.

Be a benefactor, find out when Nikolka is to go to Taganrog in the matter and reckoning of his military service. Find out at the town council and, if at all possible, let me know quickly.
Будь благодетелем, справься, когда Николке ехать в Таганрог в отношении и рассуждении солдатчины. Справься в думе и, по возможности, скорей уведомь.
