1 Written from the Lintvaryov estate near Sumy on 10 June 1888 to Chekhov’s elder brother Alexander Pavlovich, shortly after a visit Alexander had paid the family there.
2 A teasing, affectionate letter recounting the aftermath of Alexander’s visit: his tipsy stunt with a visiting conjuror that had the household in stitches, his sudden ill-tempered departure for the station, and a small domestic incident – Anton tore up a letter Alexander had drunkenly addressed to Elena Mikhailovna Lintvaryova rather than send it on. Anton reports that the household, especially the young women, took a great liking to Alexander despite the scene, relays a parting remark Alexander made to Egor Mikhailovich ("Zhorzh"), and needles his brother about the servant Nikolka, whom Alexander had scolded that night. The letter closes with an invitation to visit again in late summer and a request for money owed.

As for us, we are quite sorry that we did not stay in the garden that evening and did not see your performance with the conjuror. They say your intervention had astonishing results: the public was made fools of, and the conjuror was made happy. The whole household is still laughing, remembering how you talked to him. If you hadn’t overdone it at the start, everything would have gone splendidly, and the ladies would not have dragged me out of the garden.
Что касается нас, то мы весьма сожалеем, что не остались вечером в саду и не видели твоего представления с фокусником. Говорят, что твое вмешательство имело результаты поразительные; и публика была одурачена, и фокусник был осчастливлен. До сих пор вся усадьба хохочет, вспоминая, как ты разговаривал с ним. Если бы ты не пересолил вначале, то всё было бы великолепно, и дамы не потащили бы меня из сада.
I simply cannot understand what it was that made you so angry that you had to go off to the station at two in the morning. I remember that you were cross both with me and with Nikolka... With me, chiefly, because I tore the corner off an envelope containing a letter to Elena Mikh. I tore the corner because I took the letter for a joke and did not suppose you could be writing to Elena Mikh about anything serious... Since the letter had been written by you while drunk, I did not send it on to its address but tore it up instead. If this displeases you, write her another, though I imagine there is nothing whatever left for you to write to her about.
Я никак не пойму: что рассердило тебя и заставило ехать на вокзал в 2 часа? Помню, что ты злился и на меня и на Николку... На меня, главным образом, за то, что я оторвал угол у конверта, в кром находилось письмо к Елене Мих. Я порвал угол, потому что считал это письмо юмористическим и не предполагал, что ты можешь писать Елене Мих о чем-либо важном... Так как это письмо было написано тобою в пьяном виде, то я не послал его по адресу, а изорвал. Если это тебе не нравится, то напиши ей другое, хотя, полагаю, писать ей решительно не о чем.
You made the very best impression on the whole household, and everyone – the young ladies especially – is afraid you did not like the dacha and left with a bad feeling about it. Elena Mikh considers you an extraordinary man, and I am not undeceiving her. Everyone sends their regards and begs your pardon... For what? As you were leaving, you said to Egor Mikh (Zhorzh):
Впечатление на всю усадьбу ты произвел самое хорошее, и все, в особенности девицы, боятся, что тебе дача не понравилась и что ты уехал с нехорошим чувством. Елена Мих считает тебя человеком необыкновенным, в чем я не разуверяю ее. Все кланяются тебе и просят извинения... За что? Уезжая, ты сказал Егору Мих (Жоржу):
"Tell them I am pleased with only you and Ivanenko – as for the rest, etc...."
– Скажите, что я доволен только вами и Иванен-кой, все же остальные и проч....
I have already forgiven them all in your name, without waiting for your leave to do so.

It was pointless of you to leave, pointless to be angry, and pointless to sit at the station for two hours... It will likewise be foolish of you if you don’t come back to us again in August or the beginning of September. If you do come, we’ll split the travel costs, only don’t be angry over nothing and don’t scold Nikolka, who looked utterly helpless that night. It strikes me that, along with you, his own hope of soon getting away from Sumy County was leaving too.
Напрасно ты уехал, напрасно злился и напрасно сидел на вокзале 2 часа... Глупо также сделаешь, если не приедешь к нам еще раз в августе или в начале сентября. Если приедешь, то дорожные расходы пополам, только не злись попусту и не ругай Николку, крый имел в ту ночь очень беспомощный вид. Мне сдается, что вместе с тобою уезжала для него и надежда уехать в скором времени из Сумского уезда.
