• Summer Cottagers §1 dacha platform

  Moscow's prosperous professional families summered outside the city at dachas reached by suburban rail; the platform of the local halt was the social hinge of dacha life, where residents met trains bringing newspapers, letters, and, as here, visiting relatives.

• From the Memoirs of an Idealist §3 dacha

  A country or suburban house rented for the warm months by prosperous urban families; renting out a spare room to a lodger, as Sofya Pavlovna does here, was a common way for a woman living alone to offset the cost.

• The Cripple §3 dacha

  A country or suburban house used chiefly as a warm-weather residence by prosperous urban Russian families, often in a wooded district just outside a city.

• The Cat §10 at the dacha

  A summer country house rented or owned outside the city by prosperous urban families; the couple's dacha stay, with its open windows and garden full of stray cats, sets the story's setting and comic premise.

  A dacha is a country house or summer villa outside a Russian city, typically owned or rented by wealthier urban families for the warm months; Prince Bibulov's dacha is the destination of both the engagement party and, eventually, the missing double-bass case.

  The dacha is the summer cottage of prosperous urban Russians, rented or owned in a wooded district outside the city for the warm months -- the entire farce depends on the fact that these settlements consist of rows of near-identical cottages, easy to mistake for one another after dark and several glasses of wine.
