To N. A. Leikin, 25 June 1884. Voskresensk.
Headnote
Written the summer after Chekhov completed his medical degree, this letter to Nikolai Leikin – his editor at "Oskolki" – finds him newly minted as a physician and settled for the season near the New Jerusalem Monastery outside Voskresensk. He apologizes for a story that came out "lumpy" ("The Examination for Rank"), worries over the mail’s unreliable path to Petersburg via a passing pilgrim, and sketches the rhythms of his dacha summer: fishing with a local old-timer, evening walks, and duty as the district’s doctor. The letter closes with a note that a subsequent letter – delayed "through circumstances beyond the editors’ control" – follows.

Nikolai Alexandrovich!
The first pancake of the dacha season has come out lumpy, it seems. In the first place, the story didn’t turn out well. "The Examination for Rank" is a nice subject, being one from everyday life and familiar to me, but the execution demands not an hour’s work and not 70–80 lines, but a good deal more... I wrote and kept striking things out, afraid of the length. I crossed out the examiners’ questions and the postal clerk’s answers – the very heart of the examination. In the second place, this story had to go through every kind of torment, starting at my own desk and ending in a pilgrim woman’s pocket. The thing is, having brought my story to the local post office, I was floored by the news that the post doesn’t go out on Sunday and that my letter could only reach Petersburg on Wednesday. That cut me to the quick. There remained one of two things: either rest on my laurels, or race to the railway station (21 versts) to catch the mail train. I did neither the one nor the other, but decided to entrust my correspondence to someone going to the station. I couldn’t find a driver. I had to bow down to a stout pilgrim woman... If the pilgrim woman makes it to the station in time for the mail train and manages to drop the letter in the proper place, then I triumph; but if God doesn’t grant her the honor of serving literature, then you’ll get the story along with this letter.
Now about subjects for drawings. Here above all I must confess that I’m very dull at inventing sharp captions. You could cut my throat and I still wouldn’t think up anything clever for you. All those captions I sent you before were the property not of a moment but of every age I’ve lived through. I gave up everything I had – the good and the rotten – and nothing is left. A subject is given by chance, and though there’s no shortage of chances in my life, I have no gift for turning chance to use. But be that as it may, I’ve worked out the following plan of action. I’ll send you everything that happens to climb into my head. Writers of captions, even dead, know no shame. You won’t embarrass me if I send something absurd...
I do know how to invent captions, but – how? In company... You lie about like this on the sofa in a noble state of tipsiness, talk nonsense with your friends, and look! something or other wanders into your head... I’m also capable of developing someone else’s subjects, if there are any on hand...
I’m living now in New Jerusalem... I live with an air of consequence, since I feel in my pocket a physician’s diploma. The countryside all around is magnificent. Wide open spaces and a complete absence of summer visitors. Mushrooms, fishing, and the district clinic. The monastery is full of poetry. Standing at the all-night vigil in the half-dark of the galleries and vaulting, I devise subjects for "sweet sounds." There are plenty of subjects, but I am quite unable to write... Tell me, for pity’s sake, where I could publish such "long" stories as you saw in "Melpomene’s Tales"? In "Mirskoy Tolk"? And besides, I’m lazy... Forgive me, for God’s sake... I’m writing this letter... lying down... What do you think of that? I’ve propped a great fat book on my stomach and I write. Sitting is too much trouble... Every Sunday at the monastery there’s an Easter service with all its finery... Leskov probably knows about this peculiarity of our monastery. Every evening I stroll about the neighborhood in company that’s a motley of men’s, women’s, and children’s modes et robes fashionable clothing (French).. In the evening I go to the post office to see Andrei Yegorych for the newspapers and letters, rummaging through the mail meanwhile and reading the addresses with the diligence of an inquisitive idler. Andrei Yegorych gave me the subject for the story "The Examination for Rank." In the morning the local old-timer, grandfather Prokudin, a desperate fisherman, calls for me. I put on tall boots and go off somewhere to Ramenskoye or Rubtsovskoye to make an attempt on the lives of perches, chub, and tench. The old man sits for whole days on end; I make do with 5–6 hours. I eat my fill and drink moderately of "leaf-tea" vodka. My family is with me, boiling, baking, and frying on the means provided by my scribbling. One can live... Only one thing is bad: I’m lazy and I earn little. If you’re going to be in Moscow, why not turn aside into New Jerusalem? It’s so close. From Kryukovo station it’s 21 versts, two hours’ ride, by a two-rouble driver. My brother Nikolai will be your guide. And Palmin could be brought along too". You’d hear the Easter service... Eh? If you write, I might even come to Moscow to meet you...
I’m in a panic. This week I have to cook up a feuilleton for "Oskolki," and I haven’t a single event to hand. From now on I’ll send it out on Saturdays... You’ll get it on Mondays.
I’m a frequent visitor at the chambers of the justice of the peace Golokhvastov – a well-known contributor to "Rus." I see Markevich, who gets 5000 a year from Katkov for his fractures and abysses.

I’ve finished my course... I believe I already wrote you about it. Or maybe I didn’t... I was offered the post of district doctor in Zvenigorod – I refused. (If you come, we could go and see Savva of Zvenigorod – that’s à propos.) And with that... I believe there’s nothing more to write. My regards, and I commend myself to your holy prayers.

Oh yes! I had my little book printed on credit, to be paid off over the course of four months from the day it comes out. What’s happening now in Moscow with my book, I don’t know.
I want to go fishing right now... What a nuisance! I got a commission from "Budilnik" and, I think, for lack of energy I won’t carry it out...
