A staid but drinking locksmith who rents a room from Putokhin for two and a half roubles, works at mending locks and pistols while considering himself a specialist in musical instruments, and repeatedly drinks "for company" with Putokhin, ultimately helping precipitate the final binge that ends with Putokhin's disappearance.
