St. Peter's Day

Headnote

1 St. Peter’s Day (“Petrov den” in the original) is one of Chekhov’s very first published pieces, appearing in 1880 – the same year the twenty-year-old medical student began signing his comic sketches “Antosha Chekhonte.” The title names the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, 29 June (Old Style), which fell in Russia at the traditional opening of the summer hunting season: the day, as the story’s first line has it, on which debts, unpaid bills, and even wives are forgotten in favor of the gun.

The piece belongs to a genre Chekhov returned to often in these early years, the hunting-party farce, built on the same engine as a stage vaudeville: a crowded cast assembled by a comic pretext, a journey that keeps being extended and delayed, and a string of set-piece quarrels that never resolve into a plot so much as accumulate into a single long day of misrule. Here the pretext is a quail hunt organized by the retired cornet Yegor Yegorych Obtemperansky; the cast includes a blustering retired general, a young doctor who announces from the first page that he is "out of sorts" and spends the story registering his contempt for the whole expedition, a math teacher, an elderly plebeian marksman tolerated for his age and his aim, a would-be writer, and Yegor Yegorych’s own quarrelsome brother, who forces his way along by threat and insult only to be dumped, still fuming, into the second carriage.

The hunting itself is almost beside the point – a handful of quail, a lark, a bustard missed by everyone – and gives way by the story’s second half to a drinking bout that runs, round by round, well past the "eighth" and "ninth" toward numbers the hunters themselves lose count of, while a schoolboy nephew is goaded into matching the men glass for glass. The doctor’s unexplained disappearance mid-afternoon, and the accusation flung at him by Yegor Yegorych’s brother – that he has gone off with their host’s wife – triggers the story’s one real dramatic turn: Yegor Yegorych abandons the whole party to race home, only to find, searching the house in a jealous fury, not the doctor but the local psalm-reader under his wife’s bed. The doctor himself, it turns out, has done nothing more scandalous than fall asleep drunk in the woods and walk the twenty-four versts home at night, arriving to compose an indignant letter of protest.

Nothing here yet carries the withheld feeling of the mature Chekhov; this is the young Chekhonte working at speed, piling up comic names (Bolva, Nekrichikhvostov, the puppy aptly called "Futile"), running gags, and a bawdy punchline, for a newspaper audience that wanted its humor broad and its scandals silly rather than sad.

The morning of the longed-for, long-dreamed-of day arrived – it arrived, hurrah, gentlemen sportsmen!! – the 29th of June... The day arrived on which debts are forgotten, and fleas, and the high cost of provisions, and mothers-in-law, and even young wives – the day on which one may show the local constable, who forbids the shooting, twenty rude gestures...
The stars grew pale and dim... Here and there voices were heard... A blue, acrid smoke poured up from the village chimneys. On the gray belfry appeared a sexton not yet fully awake, and struck the bell for matins... The snoring of a night watchman, stretched out under a tree, could be heard. The starlings woke, stirred, flew from one end of the garden to the other, and set up their unbearable, tiresome chirping... In the blackthorn an oriole began to sing... Above the servants’ kitchen the starlings and hoopoes bustled about... The free morning concert had begun...
Two troikas drove up to the tumbledown porch, picturesquely overgrown with stinging nettle, of the house belonging to the retired cornet of the Guards, Yegor Yegorych Obtemperansky. In the house and in the yard a terrible commotion arose. Everything living in the vicinity of Yegor Yegorych set to walking, running, and stamping up and down every staircase, shed, and stable... They changed one of the shaft-horses. The coachmen’s caps flew off their heads, on the footman’s – Katka’s toady’s – nose a red lantern of a nose began to glow, the cook-women were called "bitches," the name of Satan and his angels was heard... In five minutes the tarantasses were filled with rugs, robes, bundles of provisions, and gun-cases.
"Ready, sir!" Avvakum boomed in his bass.
"If you please! Ready!" cried Yegor Yegorych in a sweet little voice, and on the porch a numerous public appeared. First to leap into the tarantass was the young doctor. After him crawled the burgher of Archangel, Kuzma Bolva, a little old man in boots without heels, in a rust-colored top hat, with a twenty-five-pound double-barreled gun and yellow-green blotches on his neck. Bolva is a plebeian, but the gentlemen landowners, out of respect for his advanced years (he was born at the end of the last century) and his skill at hitting a tossed twenty-kopeck coin, do not disdain his plebeian birth and take him along on the hunt.
"If you please, your excellency!" Yegor Yegorych turned to a small, gray-haired little fat man in a white tunic with bright buttons and an Order of St. Anna at his neck. "Make room, doctor!"
The retired general grunted, put one foot on the step, and, supported by Yegor Yegorych, shoved the doctor with his stomach and settled himself heavily beside Bolva. After the general leapt the general’s puppy, Futile, and Yegor Yegorych’s setter, Musician.
"M-m-m... that is, my boy... Vanya!" the general turned to his nephew, a schoolboy youth with a long single-barreled gun across his back. "You may sit here, next to me. Come here! Yes... Here. Don’t misbehave, my friend! You’ll frighten the horse!"
Having once more blown tobacco smoke into the shaft-horse’s nose, Vanya leapt into the tarantass, shoved Bolva away from the general, and, after turning about, sat down. Yegor Yegorych crossed himself and sat beside the doctor. On the box, next to Avvakum, perched the tall, dry teacher of mathematics and physics at Vanya’s school, Monsieur Manje.
The first tarantass was filled. The loading of the second tarantass began.
"Ready!" cried Yegor Yegorych, when into the second tarantass, after long disputes and running about here and there, the remaining eight persons and three dogs had settled themselves.
"Ready!" cried the guests.
"Well? So then, shall we start, your excellency? God bless us – drive on, Avvakumka!"
The first tarantass lurched and started off. The second, which held the most ardent of the hunters, lurched, gave a desperate creak, veered a little to one side, and, finding itself ahead of the first, rolled off toward the gate. The hunters all smiled at once and clapped their hands for joy. Everyone felt himself in seventh heaven, but... malicious fate!.. they had not yet succeeded in driving out of the yard when a scandal occurred...
"Stop! Wait! Stop!!!" came a piercing tenor from behind the troikas.
The hunters looked back and turned pale. Chasing after the troikas was the most unbearable man in the world, a scandalmonger known to the whole province, Yegor Yegorych’s brother, the retired second captain Mikhei Yegorych... He waved his arms desperately. The troikas stopped.
"What do you want?" asked Yegor Yegorych.
Mikhei Yegorych ran up to the tarantass, stood on the step, and swung at Yegor Yegorych. The hunters raised a clamor.
"What is this?" asked Yegor Yegorych, turning red.
"This is what," shouted Mikhei Yegorych, "that you’re a Judas, a brute, a swine!.. A swine, your excellency! Why didn’t you wake me? Why didn’t you wake me, you ass, I’m asking you, you scoundrel? Permit me, gentlemen... I mean nothing... I only want to teach him a lesson! Why didn’t you wake me? Don’t want to take me along? Would I be in the way? You got me drunk on purpose last night and thought I’d sleep till noon! What a fine fellow! Permit me, your excellency... I’ll just give him one... smack... Permit me!"
"Why are you climbing in here?" shouted the general, spreading out his arms. "Don’t you see there’s no room? You’re really quite too much... allowing yourself..."
"You’re scolding for nothing, Mikhei," said Yegor Yegorych. "I didn’t wake you because there’s no need for you to come with us... You don’t know how to shoot. Why should you come? To get in the way? You don’t know how to shoot, after all!"
"I don’t know how? I don’t know how to shoot?" cried Mikhei Yegorych so loudly that even Bolva stopped up his ears. "But in that case, what the devil is the doctor doing coming along! He doesn’t know how to shoot either! Does he shoot better than I do?"
"He’s right, gentlemen," said the doctor. "I don’t know how to shoot, I don’t even know how to hold a gun... I can’t stand shooting... I don’t know why you’re taking me along... What the devil for? Let him take my place! I’m staying!.. There’s room, Mikhei Yegorych!"
"You hear that, you hear? Why are you taking him, then?"
The doctor rose with the evident intention of climbing out of the tarantass. Yegor Yegorych seized the doctor by the coattail and pulled him down.
"But... don’t tear my coat! It cost thirty rubles... Let go! And in general, gentlemen, I’d ask you not to converse with me today... I’m out of sorts and might cause unpleasantness, without wishing to. Let go, Yegor Yegorych! Sit in my place, Mikhei Yegorych! I’m going to bed!"
"You must go, doctor!" said Yegor Yegorych, not releasing the coattail. "You gave your word of honor that you’d come!"
"That was a forced word of honor. Well, why should I go, why?"
"Why, for this," piped Mikhei Yegorych, "so that you shouldn’t stay behind with his wife! That’s why! He’s jealous of you, doctor. Don’t go, my dear fellow! Don’t go, out of spite! He’s jealous, by God he’s jealous!"
Yegor Yegorych flushed deeply and clenched his fists.
"Hey, you!" someone shouted from the other tarantass. "Mikhei Yegorych, enough of your nonsense! Come here, there’s room now!"
Mikhei Yegorych smiled maliciously.
"Well, shark?" he said. "Who won? Hear that? There’s room! I’ll come out of spite! I’ll come and be in the way! Word of honor, I’ll be in the way! You won’t kill a damn thing! And you, doctor, don’t go. Let him burst with jealousy."
Yegor Yegorych rose and shook his fists. His eyes filled with blood.
"Scoundrel!" he said, turning to his brother. "You’re no brother of mine! It’s no wonder our late mother cursed you! Our father died in the prime of life on account of your immoral conduct!"
"Gentlemen..." the general put in. "I suppose... that’s enough. Brothers, own brothers!"
"He’s an own ass, your excellency, not a brother! Don’t go, doctor! Don’t go!"
"Drive on, may the devil take the lot of you... A-a-a... The devil knows what this is! Drive on!" shouted the general, and struck Avvakum’s back with his fist. "D-drive on!"
Avvakum struck the horses, and the troika started off. In the second tarantass the writer, Captain Kardamonov, took the two dogs onto his lap and seated the eager Mikhei Yegorych in their place.
"Lucky for him there was room!" said Mikhei Yegorych, settling himself in the tarantass, "or else I’d have given him... Write this brigand up, Kardamonov!"
Kardamonov had, the year before, sent an article to The Field under the title: "A Curious Case of Multiple Births Among the Peasant Population," had read in the letters column an answer disagreeable to his authorial self-esteem, had complained to his neighbors, and had gained the reputation of a writer.
According to the plan laid down in advance, it had been decided to drive first of all to the peasants’ hayfield, situated seven versts from Yegor Yegorych’s estate – to hunt quail. Arriving at the hayfield, the hunters climbed out of the tarantasses and split into two groups. One group, led by the general and Yegor Yegorych, set off to the right; the other, with Kardamonov at its head, went to the left. Bolva fell behind and went on by himself. In the hunt he loved silence and quiet. Musician ran ahead barking and in a minute flushed a quail. Vanya fired and missed.
"Flew up too high, damn it!" he muttered.
The puppy Futile, brought along "to get used to it," hearing a shot for the first time in his life, barked and, tail between his legs, ran back to the tarantasses. Manje fired at a lark and hit it.
"I like this little bird!" he said, showing the lark to the doctor.
"Get out of here..." said the latter. "In general I’d ask you not to converse with me. I’m out of sorts today. Go away from me!"
"You’re a skeptic, doctor!"
"Me? Hm... And what does ’skeptic’ mean?"
Manje fell to thinking.
"’Skeptic’ means a man-hater... a man-hating fellow," he said.
"You’re lying. Don’t use words you don’t understand. Go away from me! I might cause unpleasantness without wishing to... I’m out of sorts..."
Musician made a point. The general and Yegor Yegorych turned pale and held their breath.
"I’ll shoot!" whispered the general. "I... I... permit me! You’ve now already, for the second time..."
But the point failed. The doctor, having nothing better to do, threw a pebble at Musician and hit him between the ears... Musician yelped and jumped. The general and Yegor Yegorych looked round. A rustle sounded in the grass and a large bustard rose up. In the second group there was a shout, and they pointed at the bustard. The general, Manje, and Vanya took aim. Vanya fired, Manje’s gun misfired... It was too late! The bustard flew off beyond the mound and settled in the rye.
"I suppose, doctor, that... this is not the moment for jokes!" the general turned to the doctor. "Not the moment, sir!"
"Eh?"
– А?
"This is not the moment for jokes."
"I’m not joking."
"That’s not fitting, doctor!" observed Yegor Yegorych.
"You shouldn’t have brought me, then... Who asked you to take me? Besides that... I don’t care to explain myself... I’m out of sorts today..."
Manje killed another lark. Vanya flushed a young rook, fired, and missed.
"Flew up too high, damn it!" he muttered.
Two shots rang out one after another: Bolva had brought down, beyond the mound, with his heavy double-barreled gun, two quail, and put them in his pocket. Yegor Yegorych flushed a quail and fired. The wounded quail fell into the grass. Triumphant, Yegor Yegorych picked it up and brought it to the general:
"In the wing, your excellency! Still alive, sir!"
"Y-yes... Alive... It must be put to a quick death."
Having said this, the general raised the quail to his mouth and bit through its throat with his teeth. Manje killed a third lark. Musician made another point. The general threw his cap from his head, raised his gun... "Charge!" A large quail rose up, but... the wretched doctor was standing directly in the line of fire, almost in front of the muzzle!
"Get away!" shouted the general.
The doctor jumped aside, the general fired, and of course the shot came too late.
"That’s low, young man!" cried the general.
"What do you mean?" asked the doctor.
"You’re getting in the way! The devil take you and your getting in the way! Thanks to you I missed! The devil knows what this is – it’s disgraceful!"
"And what are you shouting about? Pff... not afraid! I’m not afraid of generals, your excellency, especially not of retired ones. Quiet down, if you please!"
"Amazing fellow! Walks around and gets in the way, walks around and gets in the way – it would try an angel’s patience!"
"Don’t shout, please, general! Shout at Manje instead! He, by the way, is afraid of generals. A good hunter is never in anyone’s way. Better say you don’t know how to shoot!"
"Enough, sir! You get one word – you give ten... Vanichka, hand me the powder flask!" the general turned to Vanya.
"Why did you invite this boor to the hunt?" the doctor asked Yegor Yegorych.
"Can’t be helped, brother!" answered Yegor Yegorych. "There was no not taking him. I owe him, you know... eight thousand... Eh-heh-heh, brother! If not for those cursed debts..."
Yegor Yegorych did not finish and waved his hand.
"Is it true you’re jealous?"
Yegor Yegorych turned away and took aim at a kite flying high overhead.
"You’ve lost him, milksop!" the general’s thunderous voice rang out. "You lost him! He’s worth a hundred rubles, you little pig!"
Yegor Yegorych went up to the general and asked what was the matter. It turned out that Vanya had lost the general’s cartridge belt. A search for the cartridge belt began, and the hunt was interrupted. The search continued for an hour and a quarter and ended successfully. Having found the cartridge belt, the hunters sat down to rest.
In the second group the quail hunting had also not gone entirely well. In that group Mikhei Yegorych was to the others what the doctor had been in the first, even worse. He knocked guns out of hands, cursed, beat the dogs, spilled powder, in a word – carried on the devil knows what... After unsuccessful shots at the quail, Kardamonov and his dogs went off in pursuit of a young kite. The kite was shot at and not found. The second captain killed a ground squirrel with a stone.
"Gentlemen, let’s dissect the ground squirrel!" proposed the clerk to the marshal of the nobility, Nekrichikhvostov.
The hunters sat down on the grass, took out their penknives, and set about the anatomy.
"I find nothing in this ground squirrel," said Nekrichikhvostov, when the squirrel had been cut into small pieces. "There isn’t even a heart. Now here are the guts, that much there is. You know what, gentlemen? Let’s go to the marshes! What can we kill here? Quail aren’t game; now snipe, woodcock, that’s another matter... Eh? Let’s go!"
The hunters rose and lazily made their way toward the tarantasses. Approaching the tarantasses, they fired a volley at some domestic pigeons and killed one.
"Your excel... Yegorygorch! Your... Yegorch..." shouted the second group, seeing the first at rest. "Ahoy, ahoy!"
The general and Yegor Yegorych looked round. The second group waved their caps.
"What is it?" shouted Yegor Yegorych.
"There’s news! We killed a bustard! Come quick!"
The first group did not believe in the bustard, but went to the tarantasses all the same. Having seated themselves in the tarantasses, the hunters decided to leave the quail in peace and, according to the route, to drive five more versts – to the marshes.
"I’m terribly hot-blooded when hunting," the general turned to the doctor, when the troikas had driven off some two versts from the hayfield. "Terribly! I wouldn’t spare my own father. You must, you know... forgive an old man!"
"Hm..."
"What a fine fellow he’s become, the rascal!" Yegor Yegorych whispered in the doctor’s ear. "That’s what it means, the fashion nowadays of marrying off one’s daughters to doctors! His excellency is a clever one! Heh-heh-heh..."
"And it’s grown roomier!" observed Vanya.
"Yes."
"Why should that be? Quite roomy now..."
"Gentlemen, where’s Bolva?" Manje remembered suddenly.
The hunters looked at one another.
"Where’s Bolva?" Manje repeated.
"He must be in the other troika. Gentlemen," shouted Yegor Yegorych, "is Bolva with you?"
"No, he isn’t!" shouted Kardamonov.
The hunters fell to thinking.
"Well, to the devil with him!" the general decided. "We’re not going back for him!"
"We ought to go back, your excellency. He’s very weak! He’ll die without water. He won’t make it back."
"If he wants to, he’ll make it."
"The old man will die. He’s ninety, after all!"
"Nonsense."
Driving up to the marshes, our hunters pulled long faces... The marshes were crowded with other hunters, and so it wasn’t worth climbing out of the tarantasses. After thinking a little, the hunters decided to drive five versts more, to the crown forests.
"Whom will you shoot there?" asked the doctor.
"Thrushes, harriers... Well, grouse."
"I see, sir. Well, and what are my poor patients doing now? And why did you take me with you, Yegor Yegorych? Ekh!"
The doctor sighed and scratched the back of his head. Driving up to the first grove they came upon, the hunters climbed out of the tarantasses and began to confer: who should go right and who left?
"You know what, gentlemen?" proposed Nekrichikhvostov. "By that law, so to speak, in a certain sense of nature, that the game won’t run away from us... Hm... The game won’t run away from us, gentlemen! Let’s first of all fortify ourselves! A little wine, a little vodka, a little caviar... some balyk... Right here, on the grass! What’s your opinion, doctor? You’d know best: you’re a doctor. We must fortify ourselves, mustn’t we?"
Nekrichikhvostov’s proposal was adopted. Avvakum and Firs spread out two rugs and laid out around them bundles of parcels and bottles. Yegor Yegorych cut up the sausage, the cheese, the balyk, Nekrichikhvostov uncorked the bottles, Manje sliced the bread... The hunters licked their lips and reclined.
"Well, sir, your excellency! A little glass..."
The hunters drank and had a bite. The doctor at once poured himself another and drank it. Vanya followed his example.
"But surely there must be wolves here too," Kardamonov observed profoundly, glancing sidelong at the trees.
The hunters thought it over, talked it over, and about ten minutes later decided that there were, one had to suppose, no wolves.
"Well, sir? Another round? Let’s not skip it! Yegor Yegorych, what are you looking at?"
They drank another round.
"Young man!" Yegor Yegorych turned to Vanya. "What are you thinking about, eh?"
Vanya shook his head.
"But in my presence you may," said the general. "Without me, don’t drink, but in my presence... Drink a little!"
Vanya poured a glass and drank it.
"Well, sir? A third round? Your excellency..."
They drank a third round. The doctor drank his sixth.
"Young man!"
Vanya shook his head.
"Drink, Amphiteatrov!" said Manje in a patronizing tone.
"In my presence you may, but without me... Drink a little!"
Vanya drank.
"Why is the sky so blue today?" asked Kardamonov.
The hunters thought it over, discussed it, and a quarter of an hour later decided that it was not known why the sky was so blue today.
"A hare... a hare... a hare!!! Get him!!!"
A hare appeared from behind a hillock. Two mongrels were chasing it. The hunters jumped up and grabbed for their guns. The hare flew past, dashed into the woods, drawing after it the mongrels, Musician, and the other dogs. Futile thought it over, looked suspiciously at the general, and he too dashed off after the hare.
"A big one!.. There, we should have... How did we... let it slip by?"
"Yes. What’s that bottle doing there? Haven’t you drunk it, your high-excellency? Eh-eh-eh-eh... So that’s how it is with you? Well-done, sir!"
They drank a fourth round. The doctor drank his ninth, grunted savagely, and went off into the woods. Choosing the widest patch of shade, he lay down on the grass, put his coat under his head, and at once began to snore. Vanya had become quite drunk. He drank another little glass, took up the beer, and his soul played up within him. He got up on his knees and recited twenty lines of Ovid.
The general observed that the Latin language greatly resembles French... Yegor Yegorych agreed with him and added that in studying French it was necessary to know the Latin that resembled it. Manje disagreed with Yegor Yegorych, remarking that it was not the place to discourse about languages where a teacher of physics and mathematics was sitting and so many bottles were standing, adding that his gun used to cost a great deal, that now a good gun could not be found, that...
"An eighth round, gentlemen?"
"Won’t that be too much?"
"We-e-ell... What do you mean! Eight, and too much?! You must never have drunk before, then!"
They drank an eighth round.
"Young man!"
Vanya shook his head.
"Enough of that! Come now, like a soldier! You shoot so well..."
"Drink, Amphiteatrov!" said Manje.
"In my presence, drink, but without me... Drink a little!"
Vanya set the beer aside and drank another little glass.
"A ninth round, gentlemen, eh? What’s your opinion? I can’t abide the number eight. On the eighth my father died... Fyodor... that is, Ivan... Yegor Yegorych! Pour!"
They drank a ninth round.
"It’s hot, though."
"Yes, hot, but that won’t stop us drinking a tenth!"
"But..."
"To the devil with the heat! Let’s prove, gentlemen, to the elements, that we’re not afraid of them! Young man! Show us an example... Shame your uncle! We fear neither cold nor heat..."
Vanya drank his glass. The hunters shouted "hurrah" and followed his example.
"A sunstroke could happen," said the general.
"It can’t."
"It can’t... in our climate? Hm..."
"And yet there have been cases... My godfather died of sunstroke..."
"What do you think, doctor? Can a stroke happen in our climate... a sunstroke, eh? Doctor!"
There was no answer.
"Haven’t you had to treat one, eh? We’re talking about sunstroke... Doctor, where’s the doctor?"
"Where’s the doctor? Doctor!"
The hunters looked around themselves: the doctor was not there.
"Where’s the doctor gone? Vanished! Like wax before the face of the fire! Ha-ha-ha."
"Off to Yegor’s wife!" Mikhei Yegorych blurted out.
Yegor Yegorych turned pale and dropped his bottle.
"Off to his wife!" Mikhei Yegorych went on, chewing his balyk.
"What are you lying about?" asked Manje. "Did you see him?"
"I saw him. A peasant was driving by in a little cart... well, he got in and drove off. By God. An eleventh round, gentlemen?"
Yegor Yegorych rose and shook his fists.
"I asked him: where are you going? – went on Mikhei Yegorych. – ’For strawberries,’ he says. ’To polish my horns.’ ’I’ve already grown a fine pair of horns,’ he says, ’and now I’m off to polish them.’ ’Farewell,’ he says, ’dear Mikhei Yegorych! Give my regards,’ he says, ’to my brother-in-law Yegor Yegorych!’ And winked at me like this, besides. Good health to him... heh-heh-heh."
"The horses!!" shouted Yegor Yegorych, and, staggering, ran to the tarantass.
"Quick, or you’ll be too late!" shouted Mikhei Yegorych.
Yegor Yegorych dragged Avvakum up onto the box, jumped into the tarantass, and, shaking his fist at the hunters, drove off home...
"What in the world does all this mean, gentlemen?" asked the general, when Yegor Yegorych’s white cap had vanished from sight. "He’s gone off... And on what, the devil take it, am I to leave? He drove off in my tarantass! That is, not mine, but the one I need to leave in... This is strange... Hm... Insolent of him..."
Vanya had been taken ill. The vodka, mixed with the beer, had acted as an emetic... Vanya had to be driven home. After the fifteenth round the hunters decided to give up their troika to the general, on the sole condition that he, upon arriving home, should at once send fresh horses for the rest of the company.
The general began to take his leave.
"Tell him, gentlemen," he said, "that... that only swine do such things."
"Your excellency ought to protest his promissory notes!" Mikhei Yegorych advised.
"Eh? His notes? Yes, indeed... It’s high time... He must learn some decency... I waited and waited and at last grew tired of waiting... Tell him that I’ll protest... Farewell, gentlemen! Come and see me! And he’s a swine, sir!"
The hunters said their farewells to the general and laid him in the tarantass beside the ailing Vanya.
"Drive on!"
Vanya and the general drove off.
After the eighteenth round the hunters went into the woods and, having fired at a mark a little, lay down to sleep. Toward evening the general’s horses arrived for them. Firs handed Mikhei Yegorych a letter to be passed on to "brother." In this letter was a demand, threatening a court bailiff for its non-fulfillment. After the third round (the hunters, having woken, started a new count) the general’s coachmen loaded the hunters into the tarantasses and drove them home.
Yegor Yegorych, arriving home, was met by Musician and Futile, for whom the hare had only been a pretext to run off home. Having looked sternly at his wife, Yegor Yegorych set about his search. All the storerooms, cupboards, chests, and dressers were searched – Yegor Yegorych did not find the doctor. He found another man: under his wife’s bed he discovered the psalm-reader Fortunatov...
It was already dark when the doctor woke up... Having wandered a little through the woods and remembered that he was on a hunt, the doctor swore loudly and set about hallooing. There was, of course, no answer to his halloos, and he decided to set off for home on foot. The road was good, safe, and bright. Twenty-four versts he covered in a mere four hours, and by morning was already at the district hospital. Having had his fill of quarreling with the feldshers, the midwife, and the patients, he set about composing an enormous letter to Yegor Yegorych. In this letter he demanded "an explanation of unseemly conduct," jealous husbands were reviled, and a vow was made never again to go hunting – never! even on the twenty-ninth of June.
