Peter the Apostle

The apostle who, according to the Gospels, denied three times that he knew Jesus on the night of the Passion after warming himself at a fire in the high priest's courtyard, then wept bitterly on hearing the cock crow and remembering Jesus' prediction; the student's extended retelling of Peter's denial and grief, prompted by warming himself at the widows' bonfire, is the story's central Gospel allusion.
