Headnote

"In the American Style" belongs to 1880, the first year of Chekhov’s apprenticeship in the Moscow comic weeklies, when the twenty-year-old medical student was signing himself Antosha Chekhonte and filling the humor magazines with whatever the format would carry. The title points to a specific fashionable target: the "American" personal advertisement, a newspaper genre of brisk self-promotion and blunt stipulation that Russian readers associated (rightly or not) with the matrimonial notices running in the American press, and that had begun to be imitated, half-scandalously, in Russian papers. Chekhov does not describe the genre; he performs it, end to end, as a single found document – an unnamed bachelor’s classified advertisement for a wife, laid out in the advertisement’s own numbered, itemizing logic.

The joke is entirely in the form and the disproportion it exposes. The suitor inventories himself first – his height in old Russian units, his looks, his teeth, his debts, his literary ambitions – with the deadpan thoroughness of a man describing a horse for sale, before turning, at equal length and in the same tone, to what he requires of a bride: her age, her coloring, her religion, her domestic skills, her silence, her name, and, last and least disguised, her dowry. The glancing references –to the comic weekly The Dragonfly (Chekhov’s own early venue), to the conservative Moscow Gazette and New Times, to a casual anti-Jewish slur the "advertiser" drops without comment – root the piece in the actual print culture and prejudices of Chekhov’s Moscow of 1880; the headnote does not excuse them, and the translation does not soften them.

As with the smallest of the early sketches, the method is already the mature one in miniature: no narrator intrudes to call the suitor mercenary or absurd. The advertisement is simply allowed to run its full course, its numbered clauses accumulating past the point of self-parody, and the contempt – for the form, for the man, for the transaction he thinks he is disguising as a courtship – is left entirely to the reader to supply.

Having the strongest inclination to enter into the most lawful of marriages, and bearing in mind that no marriage can do without a person of the female sex, I have the honor, the happiness, and the pleasure of most humbly asking widows and maidens to turn their gracious attention to the following:
I am a man – that above all. This is very important to the ladies, of course. 2 arshins 8 vershoks in height. Young. Old age is as far from me as the sandpiper is from St. Peter’s Day. Well-born. Not handsome, but not plain either, and plain enough that more than once, in the dark, I have been mistaken for a handsome man. My eyes are brown. On my cheeks (alas!) there are no dimples. Two molars are spoiled. I cannot boast of elegant manners, but I will let no one doubt the strength of my muscles. I wear gloves size 7 3/4. Apart from poor but noble parents, I have nothing. Though I do have a brilliant future. A great lover of pretty women in general and of housemaids in particular. I believe in everything. I occupy myself with literature, and with enough success that I rarely weep over the mailbox of the Dragonfly. I intend one day to write a novel in which the leading lady (a beautiful sinner) will be my wife. I sleep 12 hours a day. I eat barbarously much. I drink vodka only in company. I have good connections. I am acquainted with two men of letters, one versifier, and two idlers who instruct mankind in the pages of the Russian Gazette. My favorite poets are Pushkaryov and, at times, myself. I fall in love easily and am not jealous. I wish to marry for reasons known to myself alone, and to my creditors. Such am I! And now for what my bride must be:
A widow or a maiden (whichever she prefers) no older than 30 and no younger than 15. Not a Catholic – that is, one who knows that in this world no one is infallible – and in any case not a Jewess. A Jewess will always be asking, "And how much do you get a line? And why didn’t you go and see Papa, he’d have taught you how to make money?" – and I do not care for that. A blonde with blue eyes and (please, if it can be arranged) black eyebrows. Not pale, not ruddy, not thin, not stout, not tall, not short, agreeable, not possessed by devils, not close-cropped, not talkative, and a homebody. She must:
Have a good hand, because I am in need of a copyist. There is not much copying work.
Love the journals I contribute to, and hold to their line for the rest of her life.
Not read Entertainment, the New Times Weekly, or Nana; not be moved by the leading articles of the Moscow Gazette, nor faint from the like articles in the Shore.
Be able: to sing, to dance, to read, to write, to boil, to fry, to brown, to be tender, to bake (but not to scold), to lend her husband money, to dress with taste at her own expense (NB), and to live in absolute obedience.
Not be able: to whine, to hiss, to squeal, to shout, to bite, to bare her teeth, to break dishes, or to make eyes at the friends of the house.
Remember that horns are no adornment to a man, and that the shorter they are the better and the safer for the one who will be paid, with pleasure, for the horns.
Not be called Matryona, Akulina, Avdotya, or other such vulgar names, but be called something a little nobler (for instance, Olya, Lenochka, Marooska, Katya, Lipa, and the like).
Keep her own mama – that is, my deeply respected mother-in-law – at the other end of the earth from herself (otherwise I will not answer for myself), and
Have a minimum of 200,000 rubles in silver.
This last point, however, may be revised, should it please my creditors.
