Toward a Characterization of the Peoples

"Toward a Characterization of the Peoples" ("К характеристике народов") appeared in 1884, signed with the subtitle joke that supplies its whole premise: these are "the notes of a naive member of the Russian Geographical Society." It belongs to the Antosha Chekhonte years, when Chekhov, still a medical student, was filling the comic weeklies with squibs built on a single conceit run to its logical extreme.

The conceit here is the ethnographic survey column — the kind of potted national-character piece newspapers of the day ran as filler, solemnly cataloguing what "the French,the English," or "the Persians" are like. Chekhov keeps the form’s deadpan cadence exactly and empties it of anything but non sequitur: the French are frivolous because Sarah Bernhardt divorces often; the Swedes gave Russia the safety match but not one that lights; the English value time so highly that "time is money" becomes literal, and they send hired proxies to their own rendezvous. Real names of the day are folded in without comment — Sarah Bernhardt, Alphonse Daudet, the playwright-landowner Konstantin Shilovsky, the entrepreneur Yuli Schreier, the banker Rykov mid-scandal — so that the joke lands partly as topical satire for readers who caught the references and partly as pure nonsense for anyone who didn’t, which is still most of its comedy today.

What to watch for is the escalation by repetition: each nationality gets the same brisk, faux-authoritative treatment, and the absurdity compounds paragraph by paragraph until the final "notes" heading, left conspicuously bare, punctures the whole scholarly pretense at once. Chekhov offers no commentary of his own — the piece is pure mechanism, timing rather than argument, the twenty-two-year-old journalist testing how far a single joke-form could be pushed before it broke.
