Tatyana Repina

Headnote

1 "Tatyana Repina" ("Татьяна Репина") is a one-act drama Chekhov wrote in the autumn of 1889 as a private gift, dedicated by name to his friend and publisher A. S. Suvorin – a personal continuation of Suvorin’s own play of the same title, which had premiered earlier that same year. Suvorin’s "Tatyana Repina" dramatized the suicide of its title character, an actress driven to poison herself after being abandoned by her lover, Sabinin; Chekhov’s sequel picks the story up after that play’s own final curtain, at Sabinin’s wedding to a new bride. By all available evidence this was never intended for public staging or publication in Chekhov’s lifetime: it was printed in a very small private run – accounts place the number of copies in the dozens – for circulation among friends rather than sale, and it did not reach the general public until well after Chekhov’s death. The exact print run and the full list of original recipients cannot be independently verified from the source text itself and are given here with appropriate caution rather than asserted as settled fact; what is well documented is the play’s private, dedicatory character and its long absence from Chekhov’s public bibliography during his own lifetime.

2 The play is staged almost entirely inside an Orthodox wedding ceremony, and a large portion of its text – easily half – consists of the actual liturgy of the Rite of Crowning (Таинство Венчания), transcribed and voiced by the priest and deacon in real time: the betrothal prayers, the crowning itself, the Epistle and Gospel readings, the Great Litany with its prayers for the imperial family, the common cup, the ceremonial procession around the lectern, and the closing blessings. Around and beneath this liturgy, a crowd of wedding guests carries on an unbroken current of gossip, complaint, and idle cruelty – about the heat, a decoration, a perfume, the governor’s mistress, and, increasingly, about a woman who poisoned herself the night before at a nearby hotel. As the ceremony proceeds, the groom, Sabinin, grows visibly unwell: trembling, sweating, and finally confessing under his breath that he has seen "the lady in black" – Tatyana, whom the audience knows to be dead and buried – moving through the crowd. His best man, Kotelnikov, and the guests around him alternately dismiss and half-believe him. The play’s climax arrives after the wedding itself concludes: as the church empties and the sacristan extinguishes the candles, a second woman – named only as "the sister of Officer Ivanov," never given a name of her own – stumbles out from behind a column, already dying, and announces that she has poisoned herself "out of hatred" for a man who insulted her and is now "happy." Her dying cries – "A woman has perished,There is no justice,What sacrilege against life!" – explicitly echo the language used of Tatyana’s own death, making unmistakable the play’s central, bitter point: that one woman’s suicide has become a template others are already repeating, treated by the fashionable world as gossip and contagion rather than tragedy. The play ends not with the wedding’s resolution but with this second death interrupting it, and with the church’s own weary verger dismissing forty years of prayer as something God has never once been heard to answer.

3 Translation and textual notes – source condition: this translation was produced from a Wikisource plain-text transcription that has suffered unusually severe damage relative to other plays in this corpus. The cast list (Действующие лица) that should stand at the head of the play, naming and describing every character, has been lost entirely – only the heading "CHARACTERS" survives, followed immediately by stage business with no cast beneath it. Compounding this, the transcription strips almost all speaker-name markup throughout the body of the play as well, leaving a bare leading period or dash where a name should stand before nearly every line of dialogue. Restoring a full cast from this condition was not possible. Nine characters have been recovered and are named with reasonable confidence, each on the strength of direct textual evidence – either a self-identifying speaker prefix that survived intact, or an addressee named in a stage direction or within another character’s own line: David Solomonovich, Zonenstein, Sabinin, Kotelnikov, Olenina, Zakhar Ilyich, Volgin, Kuzma (the church sacristan), and Father Alexei. Of these nine, four are confirmed as actually speaking on-page under their own restored name (David Solomonovich, Sabinin, Kotelnikov, Volgin); the remaining five (Zonenstein, Olenina, Zakhar Ilyich, Kuzma, Father Alexei) are attested only as addressees named in a stage direction or within someone else’s line of dialogue, and are never confirmed to speak themselves under that name – a reply immediately follows the address in several cases, but without a surviving speaker prefix it cannot be safely attributed to them by name rather than left as an unlabeled guest voice. All other lines – the great majority of the play – are genuinely unattributable in this transcription and are left unlabeled, following the source’s own bare punctuation marker for an unidentified speaker. The Church Slavonic liturgical passages that make up so much of the play’s text are original English renderings composed directly from the Slavonic/Russian by this translation; none of it is copied or adapted from any existing prayer-book or Bible translation, though readers familiar with the Book of Common Prayer or the King James Ephesians and John will recognize the underlying texts the liturgy itself is quoting or paraphrasing.

4 Fidelity-check flag – given the severity of the source damage described above, this translation’s overall textual reliability should be understood as lower than the corpus norm for a Chekhov play, and it is flagged here for a stronger-than-usual fidelity review. The problem is entirely a matter of speaker attribution, not of missing or invented dialogue: every line of the source survives and has been translated; nothing has been cut, and no line has been assigned to a name without direct textual support. The risk instead is interpretive – a reader (or a future editor) may reasonably wish for more of the unattributed lines to carry names, and any attempt to supply them beyond what this translation has done would be guesswork dressed as restoration. One additional, isolated gap: source preserves only a bare period where a stage direction or line evidently once stood, between the movement toward the doors in and the deacon’s cry for quiet in; the translation marks this explicitly as a loss rather than inventing content to fill it.

Remember also, O God, the parents who reared them: for the prayers of parents establish the foundations of houses. Remember, O Lord our God, thy servants who are betrothed, who are come together unto this joy. Remember, O Lord our God, thy servant Peter and thy servant Vera, and bless them. Grant unto them the fruit of the womb, fair offspring, oneness of mind and of body; exalt them as the cedars of Lebanon, as a vine of goodly branches. Give unto them seed in the ear, that having all sufficiency unto themselves, they may abound unto every good work that is well-pleasing unto thee; and that they may behold their children’s children, like young olive plants round about their table; and, being well-pleasing before thee, may they shine as the lights of heaven, in thee our Lord. For thine is the glory, the dominion, the honor, and the worship, together with thy Father without beginning and thy life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

O holy God, who didst form man out of dust and from his rib didst fashion woman, and didst join her to him as a helpmeet, for it seemed good to thy majesty that man should not be alone upon the earth; do thou thyself, O Master, even now stretch forth thy hand from thy holy dwelling-place and join together this thy servant Peter and this thy servant Vera, for by thee is wife joined unto husband. Unite them in one mind, crown them in one flesh, grant unto them the fruit of the womb and the receiving of fair children. For thine is the dominion, and thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

(in a slow, deep bass)
Brethren, giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord; for the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, and he is the savior of the body. But as the church submits itself unto Christ, so let the wives also be to their own husbands in every thing…
(to Kotelnikov)
Sabinin. You’re pressing that crown right into my head.
Kotelnikov. You’re imagining it. I’m holding it a good three inches above your head.
Sabinin. I tell you, you’re pressing down!
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it, that he might sanctify it, cleansing it by the washing of water through the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish.
A guest. A fine bass voice…
(to Kotelnikov.)
The student. Would you like me to relieve you?
Kotelnikov. I’m not tired yet.
So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies; he that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh, but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord doth the church, for we are members of his body, of his flesh and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother…
Sabinin. Hold the crown higher. You’re pressing down.
Kotelnikov. What nonsense!
…and shall cleave unto his wife, and the two shall become one flesh…

A guest. I see him, I see him. He’s talking with Mashenka Ganzen. That’s his mistress.
This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his own wife even as himself, and let the wife see that she reverence her husband!!
(sings)
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia…

At that time, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. And Jesus was also called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said unto him: They have no wine! Jesus said unto her: What have I to do with thee, woman? mine hour is not yet come…

A guest. They’ll walk them round the lectern yet.

His mother saith unto the servants: Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them: Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them: Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast…
A guest. Qu’est-ce que c’est? Has someone been crushed, or what?
A guest. Shh! Quiet!

…and they bore it. When the governor of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was — though the servants who had drawn the water knew — the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him…

…every man at the beginning setteth forth the good wine, and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse; but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of signs did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory, and his disciples believed on him.

No, thank you, Father Archpriest. It isn’t the time. I still have a report to write.
Well, suit yourself.
(Comes out from behind a column, staggering.)
Who’s there? Take me away... take me away...
What’s this? Who’s there?
(Frightened.)
What is it, madam?
Lord, forgive us sinners...
Take me away... take me away...
(Moans.)
I am the sister of Officer Ivanov... his sister.
Why are you here?
I’ve poisoned myself... out of hatred... He insulted... Why should he be happy? My God...
(Cries out.)
Save me, save me!
(Sinks to the floor.)
Everyone should poison themselves... everyone! There is no justice...
(In horror.)
What blasphemy! God, what blasphemy!
Out of hatred... Everyone should poison themselves...
(Moans and writhes on the floor.)
She is in the grave, and he... he... In a woman, God himself is insulted... A woman has perished...
What a sacrilege against religion!
(Throws up her hands.)
What a sacrilege against life!
(Tears at her own clothing and screams.)
Save me! Save me! Save me!..
