Kotelnikov

also: Котельникову, Котельникова

FICTIONAL CHARACTER in Alexei Suvorin's play "Tatyana Repina", assigned to the actor Sadovsky per, \S10 ("Котельникова играет Садовский"). In, \S5, Chekhov warns that a scripted insertion for this character using the ethnic-slur term "Shmuls" for a comic bit risks being hissed off the stage, since much of the theatre's audience is Jewish; his objection is pragmatic/theatrical (fear of alienating the audience), not a moral objection to the joke's content. In, \S6, Chekhov separately judges an earlier version of Kotelnikov's material ("the golden calf" story) an arbitrary, superfluous flourish. Not a real person.
