Reading notes
- To the Chekhovs, April 1891. Nice. §6 the plain "Our Father"
The Lord's Prayer, sung congregationally (or by the choir) in the Divine Liturgy shortly before communion; Chekhov's "простое" ("plain"/"simple") sets its unadorned, familiar setting against the more elaborate operatic showpiece of the Cherubic Hymn just praised, a small contrast between liturgical plainness and choral display.
- Over Some Apples §33 the `Our Father'
The Lord's Prayer, the central prayer of Christian worship; Trifon Semyonovich demands it as a test of the girl's piety amid his taunting.
