On April
Об апреле
Headnote
A mock-etymological almanac piece (1884), one of a loose cluster of calendar-month satires Chekhov wrote in these years (compare "O Marte"/"On March" and "O Mae"/"On May"). It traces the month of April back through a deliberately garbled mix of Latin etymology and Roman history – the verb aperire, "to open"; a spurious renaming under Nero; a statue of Venus with a geometry lesson at its feet – before turning to the custom of April Fools’ pranks and a mock-historical anecdote about a troupe of German actors who fooled Peter the Great.
April received its name from the Latin verb of the 4th
