Headnote

1 Written from Petersburg on 1 December 1887, this letter goes to Vladimir Nikolaevich Davydov, the actor who had just created the title role in the Moscow premiere of Chekhov’s first full-length play, "Ivanov," at Korsh’s theater a few weeks earlier (19 November 1887). Chekhov had traveled to Petersburg braced for a cool reception and instead found the play the talk of the town, discussed at length by his host and new patron Aleksei Suvorin and by the city’s critics and editors.

2 The bulk of the letter is a numbered digest – nine points – of the literary opinions Chekhov has been gathering about the play’s form, title, morality, characterization, and ending, including Suvorin’s private view that Ivanov needs a clarifying monologue, and a warning from unnamed critics that the play’s ending will only hold up "at one condition: exceptionally good acting." Chekhov singles out Davydov’s own performance – the Act IV scene where Ivanov rushes to Sasha before his wedding – as the passage his judges praised most, and closes by thanking Davydov personally for playing the role.

Dear sir,
Vladimir Nikolaevich! As I write you this letter, my play is going the rounds, being read by all and sundry. Against my expectations (I came to Peter frightened and expecting little good), it is on the whole making a rather decent impression here. Suvorin, who has taken the liveliest, most nervous interest in my brainchild, keeps me at his place for hours at a stretch discoursing on "Ivanov." So do the rest. There is somewhat less talk than in Moscow, but still enough to make me sick of my "Ivanov." Let me give you, in brief, the opinion of my judges, which comes down to the following points:
1) The play is carelessly written. In point of form it is fit for gehenna fire and the Sanhedrin. The language is faultless.
2) No objection to the title.
3) The question of whether the play contains an immoral and insolently cynical element provokes laughter and bewilderment.
4) The characters are sufficiently vivid, the people are alive, and the life the play depicts is not invented. I have not yet heard any cavils or perplexities on this score, though I am subjected to the most exhaustive examination daily.
5) Ivanov is sufficiently sketched out. Nothing needs to be taken away or added. Suvorin, however, has kept a private opinion of his own: "I understand Ivanov very well, because I believe I am Ivanov myself, but the mass of the public, whom every author must keep in view, will not understand him; it wouldn’t hurt to give him a monologue."
6) Burenin dislikes that there is no exposition in the first act – that is not according to the rules.
7) The best and most necessary passage, in the interest of Ivanov’s characterization, has been judged by the majority to be that place in Act IV where Ivanov, on the eve of his wedding, comes running to Sasha. Suvorin is in raptures over that passage.
8) One feels a certain crowdedness in the play owing to the abundance of characters; the characters abound to the detriment of Sarra and Sasha, who are allotted too little space and who therefore come off rather pale in places.
9) The end of the play does not sin against the truth, but nonetheless amounts to a "stage lie." It can satisfy the spectator only on one condition: exceptionally good acting. I am told:
– If you will vouch that Ivanov will everywhere be played by actors like Davydov, then leave the ending as it is; otherwise we shall be the first to hiss you off.
There are many more points, but it is hard to fit them all into one letter. I shall give you the details when we meet.
Judging by the long defensive speech printed in Monday’s feuilleton of "Novosti Dnya," the talk about my "Ivanov" has still not died down in Moscow. In Peter, too, people are talking about it, and so I risk turning into a monomaniac.
As for the performance of my play at Korsh’s theater, the Petersburg editorial offices speak of it calmly and warmly: before my arrival they had received long laudatory notices (alongside which my well-wishers had been sending "correspondence" containing the devil knows what...).
In sum: a conflagration has come of a spark. Out of a trifle, somehow, has grown a strange, scarcely comprehensible apocalypse.
As for myself, I have grown calmer on Petersburg bread and feel entirely content. You played my Ivanov – in that lay all my ambition. My thanks to you, and to all the actors. Be well and happy.
Sincerely devoted,
My regards to A. S. Yanov. I have passed on your regards to everyone. Grigorovich is in Nice. Tomorrow I shall write to him about "Ivanov" and about you.
