To N. A. Leikin, 28 December 1885. Moscow.

Headnote

Written from Moscow on December 28, 1885, this letter goes again to Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, editor-publisher of the Petersburg humor weekly Oskolki ("Splinters") and Chekhov’s principal editor at the time, shortly after Chekhov’s first visit to Petersburg that December – his initial trip to the capital, during which he stayed as Leikin’s guest. Still catching up on business after the holidays, Chekhov organizes his reply "point by point," reporting on a string of errands and commissions: books delivered, a message relayed to the painter Isaac Levitan (who needs 40 rubles and is too shy to ask Leikin directly), a word passed to the writer Alexander Amfiteatrov, a signboard for a Madame Pechkovskaya, and unfinished business involving Vladimir Gilyarovsky and a bookseller.

The letter’s real interest lies in its long, affectionate, half-dreamlike recollection of the Petersburg visit itself – a tumble of names, places, and sensory fragments (the Nevsky, a compositor, towels on the walls, whitefish, the Haymarket) that Chekhov admits has left him giddy and grateful, crediting Leikin’s hospitality with the fog in his memory. He closes with New Year’s greetings, news that the writer Pavel Kicheev had attempted suicide by gunshot (unsuccessfully), and a postscript promising a further letter specifically about his Petersburg trip – a promise picked up in the correspondence that follows.

Well, my kindest and most hospitable Nikolai Alexandrovich, I have finally sat down at my desk to write to you. The trip to Petersburg and the holiday nonsense have thrown me quite off track. Work up to my ears, but when I sit down to write – nothing comes: I keep crossing out my openings; I need to go see a patient – I oversleep, or I sit down to write instead... So as not to lose the thread, I’ll write point by point:
1) All commissions have been carried out with due precision, speed, and pedantry:
a) The books were delivered to Stupin on the way from the station. The receipt was sent to you on December 26.
b) The order was delivered to Levitan, along with instruction. I impressed upon him that he doesn’t know military medical orderlies, and recommended that henceforth, for the settling of questions of a genre-and-everyday nature, he apply to me – to which he gave his full consent. He’s been to see me twice. Among other things, he begged me insistently to write to you that he desperately needs 40 rubles. He’s too shy to write to you himself, for fear of the Jews. If it’s possible to send it, please send it. Advances are a disagreeable business, but forty rubles isn’t a great sum...
c) I saw Amfiteatrov and, on your behalf, suggested he not send to "Oskolki" what has been struck out by "Budilnik." He said: "very well."
d) Pechkovskaya already has a signboard on the frame. The woman was surprised when she was offered a signboard, and said you’d already given her one. As for the fact that she has aroused sinful desires in you, I said nothing to her about that: it would have been awkward with people around...
e) I haven’t seen Gilyarovsky yet. When I do, I’ll pass along your commission regarding the bookseller who took a 50% discount.
f) Concerning the dramatic royalty and Gudvilovich’s promissory note, I await further instructions.
2) Today I sent you a New Year’s story that didn’t quite come off. I wanted to write it shorter, and spoiled it.
3) I’m checking your observations regarding Moscow journalism.
4) I sing the praises of the practices I saw in the Petersburg editorial offices, wherever I can. In general, I sing the praises of all Petersburg. A dear city, even if they abuse it in Moscow. It left me with a mass of the most delightful impressions. It’s quite possible that, in this instance, in my judgment of Petersburg, my brain has been bribed. After all, I lived at your place as if in the bosom of Christ. My whole Petersburg stay consisted of one uninterrupted pleasantness, and it’s no wonder I saw everything in rosy colors... I even liked the Peter and Paul Fortress. There’s an impossible jumble in my head: Nevsky, the Old Believer church, the couch where I slept, your desk, Bilibin, Fedya, the fat compositor, the towels on the walls, Timofei’s beard, the Borel, the Palkin, earth-pears, whitefish, the little featherbed for Rogulka and Apel, the Haymarket, Leifert... There’s no clearly drawn picture, just scattered fragments. What I remember clearly is Apel Apelich’s snout and Fedya’s whole-day, silent, contemplative wandering through the rooms; the rest is in a fog, as if in a dream... I owe this fog to you, for in the space of some three days you piled so many impressions onto my nerves that my head is fit to burst. And how I ate and drank at your place! It was as if I weren’t in Petersburg at all, but on an old-fashioned country estate... By the way: there’s no fresh whitefish to be had in Moscow.
Of course, even without my saying so, you know how grateful I am to you for your hospitality and for all the trouble you took over my weighty person, but I still think it necessary to state that gratitude once more. Ten thousand thanks.
In closing, I congratulate you and all your household on the New Year, and wish you new happiness. My deepest bow and greetings to Praskovya Nikiforovna and Fedya.
Bow to Bilibin for me and tell him I intend to write to him.
P. I. Kicheev shot himself, but... unsuccessfully. I haven’t seen Palmin yet.
With that, be well. Once more, thanks squared.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
My father was asking about the Holy Synod and the Senate. He’s cross that I didn’t go inside.
P.S. I’ll write again. I want to talk about Petersburg.
