Something Lived Through (Perezhitoe, subtitled “a psychological sketch”) dates from 1880, among the earliest pieces the twenty-year-old medical student Chekhov placed in the Moscow humor press under his “Antosha Chekhonte” signature. It is barely more than a page – a single New Year’s scene in the front hall of some institution, where the staff line up to sign a ceremonial greeting sheet – and it belongs to the sketch-and-caption vein Chekhov was mining hardest in these first years: a found situation, a rush of comic incident, no plot to speak of.
The premise is a small office ritual: everyone signs the New Year’s list, and the narrator, oddly unsettled by seeing familiar names in unfamiliar, suspiciously tidy handwriting, catches himself signing his own name with uncharacteristic care. Into this nervous little vanity steps Pyotr Kuzmich, who murmurs, almost affectionately, that he could ruin the narrator on the spot – a flourish added here, a blot dropped there, and a signature becomes disreputable. The joke escalates by repetition, in the manner of the early sketches, each variation on “want me to ruin you?” landing a beat flatter and more absurd than the last.
What keeps the piece from being pure trifle is the swerve in the narrator’s own reaction: the mounting, wholly disproportionate terror of a man who finds his whole reputation suddenly hostage to another man’s pen, and the servile gratitude – he shakes the tormentor’s hand – once the threat is lifted. Chekhov does not comment on this; he only reports the fear and the thankfulness side by side and lets their absurd proportions speak. The final line, tacked on after the reprieve, quietly reopens the threat and refuses to close the sketch on safety.
The title – literally “that which has been lived through” or “the experienced” – sits somewhat ironically over so slight and passing an incident, itself part of the joke: the grand distance between the word and the New Year’s-office trifle it is attached to.

1 (A psychological sketch)
2 It was New Year’s. I went out into the front hall.
3 There, besides the doorman, stood a few more of our people:
Ivan Ivanych,
Pyotr Kuzmich,
Yegor Sidorych... All had come to sign the sheet that lay in state upon the table. (The paper, though, was cheap, No. 8.)
4 I glanced at the sheet: too many signatures, and... oh, hypocrisy! Oh, duplicity! Where are you, flourishes, underlines, curlicues, little tails? Every letter round, smooth, even, like little pink cheeks. I see familiar names and do not recognize them. Have these gentlemen changed their handwriting?
5 I carefully dipped my pen in the inkwell, blushed for no reason I could name, held my breath, and carefully traced out my surname. Ordinarily I never used the final "
hard sign" in my signature; this time I did: began it and finished it.
6 "Want me to ruin you?" I heard a voice and a breath at my ear – Pyotr Kuzmich’s.
7 "How’s that?"
8 "I’ll just go and ruin you. Yes. Want me to? Heh-heh-heh..."
9 "No laughing here, Pyotr Kuzmich. Don’t forget where you are. Smiles are less than fitting. Forgive me, but I take it... this is a profanation, a disrespect, so to speak..."
10 "Want me to ruin you?"
11 "How’s that?" I asked.
12 "Like this... The way
von Klausen ruined me five years back... Heh-heh-heh. Very simple... I’ll take it and put a little curlicue by your name. Make a flourish. Heh-heh-heh. Make your signature look disreputable. Want me to?"
13 I turned pale. My life really was in the hands of this man with the blue-purple nose. I looked with fear, and with a certain respect, into his sinister eyes...
14 How little it takes to knock a man down!
15 "Or I’ll drip ink next to your signature. Make a blot... Want me to?"
16 A silence fell. He, conscious of his power, majestic, proud, the ruinous poison in his hand; I, conscious of my helplessness, pitiful, ready to perish – both of us silent... He fixed his round eyes on my pale face, I avoided his gaze...
17 "I was joking," he said at last. "Don’t be afraid."
18 "Oh, thank you!" I said, and, full of gratitude, shook his hand.
19 "Joking... though all the same I still could... Remember that... Off you go... For now I was joking... And after that, whatever God sends..."
