Винт

Headnote

1 Vint (“Винт”) appeared in 1884, signed “A. Chekhonte,” one of the brisk comic sketches Chekhov was producing at a furious pace for the Moscow humor weeklies while still finishing his medical degree. Its title names a real nineteenth-century Russian card game, a forerunner of bridge, whose name literally means “screw” – a small joke the story leans on throughout, since the officials in it have screwed something rather different out of their game than points.

The premise is a single absurd idea, pushed to its logical extreme in the manner of the early sketches: four minor officials of a provincial office, caught by their superior playing cards on duty at night, turn out not to be playing cards at all, but a private game of their own invention, built from photographs of their colleagues and superiors – Peresolin himself and his wife among them – pasted onto a standard deck and ranked by civil rank, office, and department. The comedy runs on bureaucratic taxonomy: state councillors as kings, department heads sorted into suits, a wife’s photograph standing in for the queen of clubs.

Chekhov gives the joke a final turn that is characteristic of his method even this early: rather than punishing the officials, the frightened chief sits down and joins the game, and by morning is coaching a subordinate on how he ought to have played his hand. The story ends not on judgment but on the games’s continuation – authority absorbed into the very absurdity it was meant to police, reported in the same level, deadpan register throughout.

– Ну, и что ж тогда б вышло? – окрысился партнер.
"I’d have led Poganin, and Ivan Andreich would have had Peresolin in hand."
– Я пошел бы с Поганкина, а у Ивана Андреича Пересолин на руках.
"They’ve dragged my name into it, for some reason..." Peresolin shrugged.
"Мою фамилию к чему-то приплели... – пожал плечами Пересолин.
