At the Almshouse for the Incurable and the Aged

В приюте для неизлечимо больных и престарелых

Headnote

"At the Almshouse for the Incurable and the Aged" is a short 1884 sketch built almost entirely from a single recurring scene: a schoolgirl and her mother make their weekly Saturday visit to a decrepit, tyrannical grandfather living out his last years in a charity home. He receives them with bad tea, maudlin boasts about a vanished feudal grandeur – serf orchestras, floggings dressed up as discipline, friendships with governors and counts – and a cruelty that surfaces the moment the conversation turns to the granddaughter’s father, whom the old man never forgives for marrying an actress.

The piece belongs to Chekhov’s mid-1880s vein of unsparing family portraiture, where a child’s-eye framing lets the grotesque particulars of the grandfather’s nostalgia – for a world of serfdom, corporal punishment, and casual cruelty – accumulate without editorial comment. The mother’s silent weeping, the girl’s private terror, and the small humiliation of the begged-for money at the story’s end do the moral work that no narrator is allowed to do directly. It is a compact, bitter anticipation of the reckonings with the old gentry order that Chekhov would return to across his career.

Every Saturday evening the schoolgirl Sasha Enyakina, a small
