Raphael
also: Raffaello Sanzio, Рахваель
The Italian Renaissance painter, invoked by Lelya's father as the standard of painterly genius in a blustering, malapropism-flavored compliment to the visiting artist Nogtev.
Reading notes
- The Liberal Sweetheart §18 Raphael
The Italian Renaissance master, invoked as a stock example of genius excusing personal vice -- the folk saying "even Raphael drank" is deployed here to defend a talented but disreputable amateur reciter.
- To the Chekhovs, 1891. Bolonya. §3 Raphael's painting "Cecilia"
The picture Chekhov names simply "Цецилия" ("Cecilia") is Raphael's \textit{Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia}, then held (as now) in Bologna's Pinacoteca Nazionale, where it was the city's principal tourist-draw painting; the attribution to Raphael was the standard nineteenth-century one, though the panel is now understood to have been largely executed by his workshop from his design. Chekhov's shorthand "the painting of Cecilia" assumes the reader will recognize the reference from any guidebook to Bologna.
- A Nasty Story §20 Рахваелю
Invoked by the blustering papa as the standard of great painting, in a malapropism-flavored compliment meant to flatter Nogtev by absurd comparison.
