1 Something Novel-Like
2 The matter got under way back in the winter.
3 There was a ball. The music thundered, the chandeliers blazed, the gentlemen kept up their spirits and the young ladies enjoyed life. In the halls there was dancing, in the card rooms there was cards, at the buffet there was drink, in the reading room there were desperate declarations of love.
4 Lelya Aslovskaya, a round, pink-cheeked blonde, with large blue eyes, with the longest hair, and with the figure 26 in her passport, sat off to one side, to spite everyone, the whole world, and herself, and seethed. Cats were scraping at her soul. The fact was that the men had begun behaving toward her worse than swinishly. In the last two years especially their conduct had been dreadful. She had noticed that they had stopped paying her any attention. They had grown reluctant to dance with her. That was not all. A wretch would pass by and not even look, as though she had already stopped being a beauty. And if one of them did happen to glance her way, by some accident, by some chance, he did not glance with wonder, not platonically, but the way one looks, before dinner, at a rich meat pie or a suckling pig.
5 And yet in years gone by...
6 “And so it is every evening, every ball!!” Lelya seethed, biting her lips. “I know why they don’t notice me, I know! They’re taking revenge! Taking revenge on me for despising them! But... but when, at last, am I to be married? Is this how one gets married? Time isn’t waiting, you know, it isn’t waiting! You wretches, the lot of you!”
7 On the evening in question fate saw fit to take pity on Lelya. When
Lieutenant Nabrydlov, instead of dancing the third quadrille he had promised her, got drunk as a lord and, passing by her, smacked his lips stupidly and thereby showed his complete disdain, she could not bear it... Her fury reached its peak. Her blue eyes clouded over with moisture, her lips trembled. Tears were ready to spring forth... So as not to show her tears to the uninitiated, she turned to the dark, sweating windows, and – oh, wondrous moment, it is you! – by one of the windows she saw a handsome young man who had not taken his eyes off her. The young man presented a most touching picture, one that pierced straight to the heart. His pose was chic, his eyes were full of love, of wonder, of questions, of answers; his face was sad. Lelya came back to life at once. She assumed the proper pose and set about the proper observation. The latter showed that the young man was not looking by chance, not idly, but without taking his eyes off her, drinking her in, admiring her.
8 “God!” Lelya thought. “If only someone would think to introduce him! What it is to have a fresh man about! He noticed at once!”
9 Soon the young man began to circle about, wandering through the halls and pestering the men.
10 “He wants to be introduced! He’s asking to be presented!” Lelya thought, choking with excitement.
11 And indeed. Some ten minutes later a young amateur actor, with a shaven, ne’er-do-well face, heeded the young man’s requests and, shuffling his feet mightily, presented him to Lelya. The young man turned out to be “one of ours,” a devilishly talented artist by the name of
Nogtev. Nogtev was a young man of about twenty-four, dark-haired, with passionate
Georgian eyes, a handsome little mustache, and pale cheeks. He never writes anything, but he is an artist. He has long hair, a Vandyke beard, a gold palette on his watch chain, gold palettes in place of cufflinks, gloves up to the elbow, and improbably high heels. A kind fellow, but stupid as a goose. He has a noble
papa, an equally noble mama, and a rich grandmother. A bachelor. He shook Lelya’s hand timidly, sat down timidly, and, once seated, began devouring Lelya with his large eyes. He was slow and timid to speak. Lelya chattered on, while he only said, “Yes... no... I, you know...,” speaking scarcely above a breath, answering beside the point, and every so often, in his confusion, scratching (his own, not Lelya’s) left eye. Lelya applauded inwardly. She had decided that the artist was smitten, and she was triumphant.
12 The next day, after the ball, Lelya sat in her room by the window and, triumphant, gazed out at the street. Along the street, before her windows, Nogtev wandered back and forth. Nogtev wandered and cast his glances up at her windows. He looked as though he were about to die: sadly, languidly, tenderly, ardently. On the third day – the same thing. On the fourth day it rained, and he was not to be seen beneath the windows. (Someone had convinced Nogtev that an umbrella did not suit his figure.) On the fifth day matters were so arranged that he came to call at the house of Lelya’s parents. The acquaintance was tied into a
Gordian knot: bound past all untying.
13 Some four weeks later there was another ball. (See the beginning.)
14 Nogtev stood by the doors, his shoulders against the doorpost, devouring Lelya with his eyes. Lelya, wishing to arouse his jealousy, flirted at a distance with Lieutenant Nabrydlov, who was drunk, not like a lord, but just a little, on the first round.
15 Her
papa came up to Nogtev from the side.
papa.
16 “Still painting away, are we?” asked papa. “Occupied with your art?”
– спросил papa.
18 “I see... A fine thing... God grant it, God grant it... Hm. God gave you such a talent, then. I see... Everyone has their own talent...”
19 Papa fell silent, then went on:
Papa
20 “Now here’s what you should do, young man, you know, here’s what you should do, seeing as you... paint and all. Come and see us in the spring, at our estate in the country. There are the most fascinating places there! Views, I tell you, quite something!
Raphael himself never had the like to paint. We’ll be very glad to have you. And besides, my daughter has grown so fond of you... Eh-heh... heh... Young people, young people! Heh-heh-heh...”
21 The artist bowed, and on the first of May of this year, together with his belongings, he set off for the Aslovskys’ estate. His belongings consisted of an unneeded box of paints, a quilted waistcoat, an empty cigar case, and two shirts. He was received with the most open arms. He was given the use of two rooms, two servants, a horse, and anything he might wish, so long as he kept offering hope. He made the most of his new position: he ate enormously, drank a great deal, slept long, admired nature, and never took his eyes off Lelya. Lelya was happier than happy. To her he was intimate, young, handsome, so timid... so much in love! He was so timid that he did not know how to approach her, and looked at her more and more from a distance, from behind a curtain or from behind a bush.
22 “Timid love!” Lelya thought, sighing...
23 One fine morning her papa and Nogtev sat on a bench in the garden, conversing. Papa held forth on the joys of family happiness, while Nogtev listened patiently, his eyes searching out Lelya’s figure.
24 “Are you your father’s only son?” papa asked, among other things.
25 “No... I have
a brother, Ivan... Splendid fellow! Charming person, I tell you! You’re not acquainted with him?”
26 “I have not had the honor...”
27 “A pity you’re not acquainted. He’s quite the wit, you know, a merry fellow, the soul of good humor! He’s occupied with literature. All the editorial offices invite him. He contributes to
The Jester. A pity you’re not acquainted. He’d be glad to make your acquaintance... Tell you what! Shall I write and have him come out here? Eh? Upon my word! It’ll be merrier!”
28 Papa’s heart was pinched as though in a door by this proposal, but – there was nothing for it! – he had to say: “Delighted!”
29 Nogtev leapt for joy at this show of good will and at once wrote his brother an invitation.
30 Brother Ivan did not delay in appearing. He did not appear alone, but together with his friend, Lieutenant Nabrydlov, and an enormous toothless
old dog, Turka. He had brought them along, as he put it, so that robbers would not attack them on the road and so there would be someone to drink with. They were given three rooms, two servants, and one horse between the two of them.
31 “Now don’t you trouble yourselves about us, gentlemen!” said Ivan to his hosts. “We don’t need your trouble. We don’t need featherbeds, or sauces, or pianos – nothing at all! But if you’d be so charitable as to see to a bit of beer and vodka, well... that’s another matter!”
32 If you picture to yourself an enormous, thirty-year-old, thick-faced fellow, in a canvas blouse, with a scraggly little beard, puffy eyes, and his tie askew, you will spare me the description of Ivan. He was the most insufferable man in the world.
33 When he was sober he was still bearable: he lay on his bed and kept quiet. Drunk, though, he was as unbearable as a burdock against bare skin. When he is drunk he talks without stopping, and swears without embarrassment before women or children. He talks of lice, of bedbugs, of trousers, and
the devil knows what else. He has no other topics, more up to date. Papa,
maman, and Lelya were at a loss and blushed when Ivan, sitting at dinner, started in on his jokes.
34 Unfortunately, during his whole stay at the Aslovskys’ estate he never once managed to be sober. Nabrydlov, meanwhile, a small, stumpy lieutenant, strained every nerve to be like Ivan.
35 “He and I aren’t artists!” he would say. “Where would we get to! We’re simple peasants!”
36 Ivan and Nabrydlov, the first thing they did, moved out of the manor house, where they found it stuffy, into the estate manager’s lodge, who was not averse to a drink with decent people. The second thing they did, they took off their coats and swaggered about the yard and the garden coatless. Lelya was forever running into her brother or
the lieutenant in the garden, sprawled under a tree in dishabille. Brother and lieutenant drank, ate, fed the dog liver, mocked their hosts, chased
the cook girls about the yard, bathed loudly, slept like the dead, and blessed the fate that had chanced to drive them to a place where one could live, so to speak, like
cheese in butter.
37 “Listen here, you!” Ivan said once to the artist, winking a drunken eye in Lelya’s direction. “If you’re after her... then to the devil with you! We won’t touch her. You started first, it’s yours by right. Honor to whom honor is due! We’re being noble about it... Success to you!”
38 “We won’t cut in, no!” Nabrydlov confirmed. “It would be swinish of us.”
39 Nogtev shrugged his shoulders and fixed his greedy eyes on Lelya.
40 When one tires of quiet, one wants a storm; when one tires of sitting decorously and nobly, one wants to raise a ruckus. When Lelya grew tired of timid love, she began to seethe. Timid love – that is a fable for the nightingale. To her great vexation, by June the artist was just as timid as he had been in May. In the manor house they were sewing the trousseau; papa dreamed day and night of a loan for the wedding, and meanwhile their relations had still not taken any definite shape. Lelya made the artist fish with her for whole days on end. But it did no good. He stood beside her with his rod, silent, stammering, devouring her with his eyes – and nothing more. Not one sweetly dreadful word! Not one confession!
41 “Call me...” papa said to him once. “Call me... Forgive me... for using the familiar ‘you’... I say it out of love, you know... Call me Papa. I’d like that.”
42 The artist, like a fool, took to calling papa Papa, but that did not help either. He remained, as before, mute where he ought to have railed at the gods for giving man only one tongue, and not ten. Ivan and Nabrydlov soon noticed Nogtev’s tactics.
43 “The devil only knows what’s the matter with you!” they railed. “You won’t eat the hay yourself, and you won’t let anyone else eat it either! What a brute! Eat it up, blockhead, when the morsel’s climbing into your own mouth! If you don’t want it, we’ll take it! So there!”
44 But everything in this world comes to an end. This story too will come to an end. And the uncertainty in the artist’s relations with Lelya came to an end.
45 The denouement of the romance took place in the middle of June.
46 It was a quiet evening. There was a scent in the air. The nightingale sang its full-throated best. The trees whispered. In the air, to use the long-winded language of Russian novelists, there hung a languor... The moon, of course, was there too. To complete the heavenly poetry, only
Mr. Fet was missing, standing behind a bush and reciting his ravishing verses to all who could hear.
47 Lelya sat on a bench, wrapped herself in a shawl, and gazed pensively through the trees at the little river.
48 “Can I really be so unapproachable?” she thought, and her imagination showed her to herself, majestic, proud, haughty... Her reflections were interrupted by papa, who came up to her.
49 “Well, what’s the news?” papa asked. “Still the same?”
51 “Hm... Devil take it... When is all this going to end? You know, my dear, feeding these idlers costs me dear! Five hundred a month! No joke! On the dog alone it comes to thirty kopecks a day for liver! If he means to propose, let him propose, and if not, then to the devil with him, and his little brother, and his dog too! What does he say, at the very least? Has he spoken to you? Explained himself?”
52 “No. He’s so shy, papa!”
53 “Shy... We know their shyness! He’s shifting his eyes away. Wait, I’ll send him here at once. Finish it with him, my dear! No need to stand on ceremony... It’s time. Go on now, my dear, you know... You’re not exactly a young girl. You know all the tricks by now, I dare say!”
54 Papa vanished. Some ten minutes later, timidly making his way through the lilac bushes, the artist appeared.
55 “You were calling me?” he asked Lelya.
56 “I was. Come here! Enough running from me! Sit down!”
57 The artist crept quietly up to Lelya and sat quietly down on the very edge of the bench.
58 “How handsome he is in the dark!” Lelya thought, and, turning to him, said:
59 “Do tell me something! Why are you so secretive,
Fyodor Panteleich? Why do you always keep silent? Why do you never open your soul to me? What have I done to deserve such distrust from you? It hurts me, truly... One might think we were not even friends... Do start talking!”
60 The artist cleared his throat, drew a broken breath, and said:
61 “I have a great deal to say to you, a very great deal!”
62 “Well, what’s stopping you?”
63 “I’m afraid you’ll be offended.
Elena Timofeyevna, you won’t be offended?”
64 Lelya giggled.
65 “The moment has come!” she thought. “How he trembles! How he trembles! Caught, my dear?”
66 Lelya’s own knees began to shake. She was seized by that thrill so dear to every novelist.
67 “In ten minutes there will be embraces, kisses, vows... Ah!” she dreamed, and, to pour oil on the fire, she touched the artist with her bare, warm elbow.
68 “Well? What is it, then?” she asked. “I’m not so untouchable as you think... (Pause.) Do speak!... (Pause.) Quickly!!”
69 “You see... Elena Timofeyevna, there is nothing in life I love as much as art... as painting, that is to say. My comrades find that I have talent, and that I’ll turn out to be no bad artist...”
70 “Oh, that’s certain! Sans doute! [Without doubt! (French).]”
Sans doute!
71 “Well, yes... So... I love my art... That is... I prefer genre painting, Elena Timofeyevna! Art... Art, you know... What a marvelous night!”
72 “Yes, a rare night!” said Lelya, and, writhing like a snake, she huddled into her shawl and half closed her eyes. (Women are clever, oh so clever, at these amorous details!)
73 “I, you know,” Nogtev went on, wringing his white fingers, “have long been meaning to speak with you, but I always... was afraid. I thought you would be angry... But you, if you understand me, then... you won’t be angry. You love art too!”
74 “Oh... Why, of course! Art, naturally!”
75 “Elena Timofeyevna! Do you know why I am here? Can’t you guess?”
76 Lelya grew badly flustered and, as though by accident, laid her hand on his elbow...
77 “It’s true,” Nogtev went on, after a pause, “there are swine among artists... It’s true... They don’t value a woman’s modesty at a farthing... But I... I’m not that sort! I have a feeling for delicacy. A woman’s modesty is such a... such a modesty as one cannot neglect!”
78 “Why is he telling me this?” Lelya thought, and hid her elbows in her shawl.
79 “I’m not like those others... To me a woman is a sacred thing! So you have nothing to fear... I’m not that sort, I’m the sort that won’t allow myself any nonsense... Elena Timofeyevna! Will you permit me? Do hear me out, upon my word it’s sincere, because it isn’t for myself, it’s for art! Art comes first with me, not the satisfaction of animal instincts!”
80 Nogtev seized her hand. She leaned a little in his direction.
81 “Elena Timofeyevna! My angel! My happiness!”
82 “And... well?”
– И... ну?
83 “May I ask something of you?”
84 Lelya giggled. Her lips were already shaping themselves for the first kiss.
85 “May I ask something of you? I beg you! Upon my word, it’s for art! I liked you so much, so much! You’re just the one I need! To the devil with all the others! Elena Timofeyevna! My friend! Be mine...”
86 Lelya stretched out, ready to fall into his arms. Her heart began to pound.
87 “Be mine...”
88 The artist seized her other hand. She meekly bowed her little head onto his shoulder. Tears of happiness glistened on her eyelashes...
89 “My darling! Be mine... my model!”
90 Lelya raised her head.
92 “Be my model!”
93 Lelya rose to her feet.
94 “How? What do you mean?”
95 “My model... Be it!”
96 “Hm... Is that all?”
97 “You would oblige me enormously! You would give me the chance to paint a picture and... what a picture it would be!”
98 Lelya turned pale. Tears of love suddenly turned into tears of despair, malice, and other unpleasant feelings.
99 “So that’s... what it is?” she said, trembling all over.
100 Poor artist! A bright red glow lit up one of his white cheeks when the sound of a ringing slap flew, mixing with its own echo, through the dark garden. Nogtev scratched his cheek and stood rooted to the spot. A kind of paralysis had come over him. He felt himself falling through the whole universe... Lightning flashed from his eyes...
101 Lelya, trembling, pale as death, half out of her senses, took a step forward, staggered. It was as though a wheel had run over her. Gathering her strength, she made her way toward the house with an unsteady, sickly gait. Her legs gave way beneath her, sparks flew from her eyes, her hands reached for her hair with a plain intention of tearing at it...
102 Only a few sazhens remained to the house when she was made to turn pale once more. In her path, near an arbor entwined with wild grapevine, stood, his arms flung wide, drunken, thick-faced Ivan, his hair uncombed, his waistcoat unbuttoned. He looked into Lelya’s face, grinned sardonically, and befouled the air with a Mephistophelian “ha-ha.” He seized Lelya by the arm.
103 “Get away from me!” Lelya hissed, and jerked her arm free...
104 A nasty story!
