Gordian knot

also: гордиевы узлы, gordievy uzly

The legendary intricate knot tied by King Gordias of Phrygia, said to be undoable only by the future ruler of Asia; Alexander the Great famously severed it with his sword rather than untying it, giving rise to the proverbial phrase for a boldly forced solution to an intractable problem.
