Self-Deception (a tale)

Самообольщение (сказка)

Headnote

"Self-Deception" is one of Chekhov’s brief comic fables from 1884, written in the early Antosha Chekhonte years when he was turning out short, punchy pieces for the Moscow humor weeklies to support himself through medical school. Subtitled "a tale" (skazka), it has the shape of a fairy tale or fable pared down to a single illustrative anecdote: a district police inspector, vain of his strength and cleverness, boasts to a company of friends that his will can overcome anything, even the course of the sun.

An old fire chief – a stock figure of provincial worldly wisdom – takes up the challenge, invoking the Delphic maxim "gnothi seauton," know thyself, to argue that no man can master his own nature. The inspector wagers he can resist the temptation of an unguarded ten-ruble note in a shopkeeper’s strongbox; after a comically prolonged struggle, he pockets the money anyway. The joke turns on the gap between grandiose self-conception and the pettiest of human weaknesses, a theme Chekhov would return to throughout his career in subtler registers. Here it is delivered as pure anecdote, its moral – self-deception undone by a small temptation – stated almost as bluntly as a proverb.

И с тех пор он уж никогда не кичился своей силой.
