Captions for Drawings

Подписи к рисункам

Headnote

Podpisi k risunkam collects Chekhov’s captions for other men’s drawings — nineteen short pieces written between 1881 and 1885, most of them for the Petersburg humor weekly Oskolki ("Fragments"), under its editor Nikolai Leikin, with earlier and later outliers in Zritel ("The Spectator") and Budilnik ("The Alarm Clock"). The genre itself is a period artifact: illustrated humor magazines ran a drawing and needed a line or a scene under it, and a stable of jobbing writers supplied "themes" — sometimes a single caption, sometimes a short dialogue — for staff artists (V. I. Porfiryev, A. I. Lebedev, N. A. Bogdanov, M. M. Dalkevich) to illustrate, or occasionally wrote to an artist’s finished drawing after the fact. Chekhov, publishing as "Antosha Chekhonte" and other house pseudonyms while he was still a medical student supporting his family by the line, did a great deal of this anonymous, disposable work; only later editorial labor reconstructed which captions were his from Leikin’s surviving correspondence, cross-checked against date, censor’s stamp, and internal evidence.

The pieces themselves are the fastest, broadest comedy Chekhov ever wrote: a wedding party’s cast of grotesques introduced by their vices in a line apiece; a dowry inventory that turns a young couple’s household goods into a small catalogue of squalor (the bed with bedbugs, the featherbed grandmother died on); two lunar astronomers misreading a distant fire as a fireworks display because no one down on Earth seems to be raising money for the victims; a German patriot who "translates" a purple passage of Russian nature-writing and manages only wooden literalism; a colonel’s tall tale about turning a garrison town’s economy around by force of libido. The mode is the single-absurdity sketch — timing, not architecture — and Chekhov keeps its snap rather than smoothing it toward the tenderness of his mature manner. A few pieces anticipate the later hand regardless: "The Hat Season," the collection’s longest and best piece, escalates a small man’s fear of being mocked for his headwear through six changes of hat to a suicide delivered in one flat, unpunctuated sentence — the joke and the pathos refusing to resolve into either, which is the doubleness Chekhov never abandoned.

Two pieces carry a documentary interest beyond the joke. "Raspereканальство!!" ("Rasperekanalstvo!!") — an invented intensifier built on kanalstvo, "scoundrelism," with the emphatic prefixes ras- and pere- stacked on for comic excess — never ran: the censor’s committee suppressed it in April 1885 along with its drawings, and it surfaced only in 1967 from the surviving galley proofs in the St. Petersburg censorship archive. Its content is mild by any standard (a colonel’s boastful anecdote about a provincial billet), which is itself the point: the editorial notes preserved here, translated along with the captions, record Leikin’s real-time frustration in 1885 as tightening censorship began refusing "anything with ideas" and even jokes about the military, against the backdrop of the Anglo-Russian war scare over Herat that the colonel’s monologue glances at directly.

The volume as reproduced here follows the Soviet Academy of Sciences Complete Works and Letters (vol. 3 of the Works, 1974–1983), which prints the nineteen captions themselves followed by the editors’ full textual notes: first-publication data, censor’s approval dates, signatures, correspondence with Leikin establishing authorship and chronology, and period annotations glossing references (the Franco-Prussian military term mitrailleuse borrowed as a nonsense-word for passionate love; the Phrygian cap as a revolutionary symbol; the English historians Mill and Buckle as fashionable reading for 1880s radical students). Front matter (title page, table of contents, scan/OCR credits) and a closing web-archive footer are preserved from the source exactly as transmitted, since they are part of the same public-domain digitization this edition draws from.
