  Trefolev's poetry drew heavily on folk-song forms and diction; several of his ballads, notably "Of the Peddler," passed directly into the folk repertoire and were sung as anonymous songs, which is part of why Chekhov -- twenty years his junior and just beginning to be noticed -- frames the promised booklet of verses as such a treat.
