On May

О мае

Headnote

A mock-etymological almanac piece (1884), one of a loose cluster of calendar-month satires Chekhov wrote in these years (compare "O Marte"/"On March"). It traces the month of May back through a deliberately garbled mix of Roman mythology (Maia, Atlas, Mercury) and invented classical citation, landing on a pun on the poet Apollon Maykov’s surname.
