1 Varvara Petrovna woke up and began to listen. Her face went pale, her large black eyes grew even larger and lit up with fear, when it turned out that this was not a dream... In terror she covered her face with her hands, raised herself on one elbow, and began waking her husband. Her husband, curled up like a ball, was quietly snoring and breathing on her shoulder.
2 “
Alyosha, darling... Wake up! Sweetheart!.. Ah... it’s dreadful!”
–
3 Alyosha stopped snoring and stretched out his legs. Varvara Petrovna tugged him by the cheek. He stretched, sighed deeply, and woke up.
4 “Alyosha, darling... Wake up. Someone’s crying...”
5 “Who’s crying? What are you imagining now?”
6 “Just listen. Do you hear? Someone’s moaning... It must be, someone’s left a child at our door... Ah, I can’t bear to hear it!”
7 Alyosha raised himself up and began to listen. Through the wide-open window gazed the gray night. Together with the scent of lilac and the soft whisper of the linden tree, a faint breeze carried strange sounds to the bed... One couldn’t make out at once what sort of sounds these were: was it a child’s crying, or
the chanting of Lazarus, or a howl... impossible to tell! Only one thing was clear: the sounds came from beneath the window, and not from a single throat but from several... There were trebles here, altos, tenors...
8 “Why,
Varya, that’s cats!” said Alyosha. “Silly girl!”
9 “Cats? Impossible! And who’s the bass, then?”
10 “That’s a pig grunting. Don’t forget, we’re
at the dacha... Do you hear? There, that’s it, cats... Well, calm down; go to sleep, God be with you.”
11 Varya and Alyosha lay back down and pulled the blanket over themselves. Through the window came a draft of morning freshness and it grew a little chilly. The couple curled up like balls and closed their eyes.
12 Five minutes later Alyosha stirred and turned onto his other side.
13 “Won’t let a man sleep, damn them!.. Howling away...”
14 The cats’ singing, meanwhile, went crescendo. New singers, new voices, seemed to be joining the choir, and the light rustling below the window was gradually turning into noise, uproar, commotion... A tender, jelly-soft piano rose to the pitch of fortissimo, and soon the air was filled with outrageous sounds. Some of the cats produced short, broken cries, others let out dashing trills, as if from sheet music, with eighth notes and sixteenths, still others drew out one long, monotonous note... And one cat, probably the oldest and most ardent of them, sang in some unnatural voice, not a cat’s voice at all, now bass, now tenor.
15 “Ma-al... ma-al... Too... too... too... karrryau...”
16 If not for the hissing and spitting, one could not have believed these were cats singing at all... Varya turned onto her other side and muttered something... Alyosha jumped up, sent a curse into the air, and shut the window. But a window is no thick thing: it lets through sound, and light, and electricity alike.
17 “I have to be up at eight, to go to the office,” Alyosha swore, “and here they are bawling away, won’t let a man sleep, devils... Do at least you keep quiet, please. Woman! Whimpering right in my ear! Whining here! How am I to blame? They’re not mine, are they!”
18 “Chase them off! Darling!”
19 Her husband swore, jumped out of bed, and went to the window... The night was drawing toward morning.
20 Glancing at the sky, Alyosha saw only a single little star, and even that one flickered as if through fog, barely, barely... In the linden tree the sparrows stirred, startled by the noise of the opening window. Alyosha looked down at the ground and saw some ten cats. Tails stretched out, hissing and treading softly over the grass, they paced like camels around a pretty little she-cat sitting on an overturned washtub, and sang. It was hard to say which was greater in them: love for the she-cat, or their own self-regard? Had they come for love’s sake, or only to show off their dignity to one another? In their dealings with each other there showed through the most refined hatred... On the other side of the fence a pig with her piglets rubbed against the palings, begging to be let into the garden.
21 “Get off!” Alyosha hissed. “Shoo! You devils! Shoo!.. Fyuit!”
22 But the cats paid him no attention. Only the little she-cat glanced in his direction, and even that in passing, reluctantly. She was happy, and had no thought to spare for Alyosha...
23 “Shoo... shoo... you fiends! Ugh, devil take you all! Varya, hand me the carafe! We’ll douse them! There now, devils!”
24 Varya jumped out of bed and handed him not the carafe but the pitcher from the washstand. Alyosha leaned his chest against the windowsill and tipped the pitcher forward...
25 “Ah, gentlemen, gentlemen!” he heard a voice above his head. “Ah, youth, youth! Now is that a thing to do, eh? Ah-ah-ahhh... Youth!!”
26 And a sigh followed after. Alyosha lifted his face and saw a pair of shoulders in a chintz dressing gown covered in large flowers, and dry, sinewy fingers. On the shoulders perched a small gray head in a nightcap, and the fingers were shaking a warning...
The old man was sitting at his window and had not taken his eyes off the cats. His little eyes shone with longing and were full of oil, as if he were watching a ballet.
27 Alyosha’s mouth fell open, he turned pale, and he smiled...
28 “Resting well,
your excellency?” he asked, for want of anything better to say.
29 “Not good, my dear sir! You go against nature, young man! You are undermining... eh... so to speak, the laws of nature! Not good, sir! What business is it of yours? After all, this is... eh... an organism? What do you say? An organism? One must understand these things! I do not approve, my dear sir!”
30 Alyosha lost his nerve, went on tiptoe back to the bed, and lay down meekly. Varya nestled beside him and held her breath.
31 “That’s our man...” Alyosha whispered... “The chief himself... And not asleep. Admiring the cats. What a devil he is! Unpleasant, living under the same roof as one’s superior.”
32 “Yo-oung man!” Alyosha heard, a minute later, the old man’s voice. “Where are you? Come here, if you please!”
33 Alyosha went up to the window and turned his face toward the old man.
34 “Do you see that white cat? What do you make of him? He’s mine! What manner, what manner he has! And that gait!.. Just look at him! Miaow, miaow...
Vaska! Vasyushka, you rascal! What whiskers on the scamp! A Siberian, the rascal! From distant parts... heh-heh-heh... And the little she-cat will be... will be in trouble! Heh-heh. My cat has always come out on top. You’ll see for yourself directly! What manner, what manner!”
35 Alyosha said that he liked the coat very much. The old man began to describe this cat’s way of life, its habits, grew carried away, and went on talking clear through until sunrise, recounting every detail, smacking his lips and licking his sinewy fingers... So there was no getting any sleep after all!
36 At one o’clock the following night the cats struck up their song again and again woke Varya. Alyosha did not dare drive the cats away. Among them was
the cat belonging to
his excellency, his superior. Alyosha and Varya listened to the cats’ concert until morning.
